Ukraine refugees
Discussion
fair play to Ukraine, banning fighting age men from leaving and letting the women an children cross the boarder.
these people are actual refugees and should be made more than welcome in the Uk. once the conflict is over they'll be happy to go home.
I just hope the Uk doesn't play 'tough' and make it difficult for them to come over.

I'll be first on this thread to raise this question...I'm not entirely sure how it will land, but it's a genuine observation.these people are actual refugees and should be made more than welcome in the Uk. once the conflict is over they'll be happy to go home.
The thread title includes "for once": making a clear distinction that Ukraine refugees are "real", unlike previous ones of late.
Personally, I think the UK (and Europe) is right to offer unqualified support, and I do think the situation here is quite unprescidented.
But I'm not quite ready to accept the less than veiled suggestion that other recent asylum seekers weren't in fact "real".
Just because the press has been 24/7 on this latest conflict in Europe, doesn't mean there aren't other causes for asylum occurring, and the UK should continue to play it's (relatively small) part in taking asylum seekers, given our wealth.

The government has been pressured to loosen up the ruleshttps://amp.theguardian.com/world/2022/mar/01/uk-t...
Whether attempts to make it hard were deliberate, or just ingrained crapness by the home office / home secretary - who knows?
Ironically, the fact the home office were play silly buggers with visa rules for ukrainans suggests their anti immigration stance isn't in fact racially driven after all, and must just be their out of the box setting - who knew?

So... men should all stay and fight and women are incapable of picking up a gun or making a bomb? The “fighting age men” thing is sexist bulls

It's more an assumption men are less capable of looking after children, so it makes sense to let the women evacuate the children. Nobody is saying women can't stay and fight if they want to, and many are.

Well if stereotypes are to be believed, the single men and fatherless families will perhaps balance out.Plenty of fighting age women remain in Ukraine too.
I see the B-word has entered the discussion, Far me it for me as someone who voted for Brexit (as opposed to the asinine "brexiteer" stooge-ry) to speak for the motives of us all but the current hard line on Ukrainian refugees certainanly wasn't it, and that people in places are interpreting it as such is either perverse incentives/motives or outright stupidity. You expect that kind of infantile thinking from internet people trying to win at forums, not real life.

Not my opinion, but i've one read on other refugee based threads. "If they are already in a safe neighbouring country after fleeing their own, why do they need to come to the UK?"s1962a said:

Has anyone told the Ukrainians not to use negative stereotypes? Just because there are thousands of fighting aged men in military uniforms marauding around the country it doesn't make them an invading army. Even if some tiny proportion of them launched rockets at buildings surely the vast majority just want to get on with their lives and enrich Ukrainian culture.
No human being is illegal.
