If you're looking for economy with a bit of go & with your budget (the smaller engined cars also come with shorter gearing so aren't as efficient on a run) I'd be looking for a 1.5-1.9d you won't want a non turbo they're hard work & you really won't save fuel.Looking to put a list together of small diesel cars.

Alfa 147 1.9d 8V these are very reliable (easily as reliable as a VAG 1.9d) & you can find ones with sensible miles in both Alfa & Fiat form.

If someone forced me to buy any diesel, it would be the Audi above, the A2. Who cares how old it is, they were an over-engineered experiment that was too radical and too expensive to be a success when new.
Now, if you don't mind the slightly 'tall' looks, a great deal of technology at bargain prices.

I am afraid, I would be put off on looks alone. Now, if you don't mind the slightly 'tall' looks, a great deal of technology at bargain prices.
It might be a good car, with good tech, but unfortunately, pig ugly.
I bought a SEAT Ibiza Ecomotive for this exact purpose.
It was £1,550, 63 plate estate with 120k on it.
£0 tax
£211 insurance (subjective I know)
Between 75 and 85mpg on my 50 mile daily commute.
£60 to fill and 700 miles on a tank.
£140 for 4 toyos fitted.
Such a cheap car to run.

Nice and cheap, looks a bit crap, but it's to save money, who cares. At least it's got cruise. Mine doesn't

agreed but you said it's for the wife's commute - looks were not in your requirements.
