Hoping for a bit of advice.

I currently use a Surface Pro 4 (i7/16GB, so decent spec) via a surface dock to run 3 external monitors. 2 monitors into mini DP port on dock, 3rd is via USB adapter into USB. It works but the 3rd USB wouldn’t have the same performance.

Therefore, looking at purchasing a PC. Thinking of a Dell Optiplex 3090 small form factor which comes with 2x DP ports.

I don’t want to end up in same situation as today. Would a graphics card with a single DP port work, or should I look at buying a graphics card with triple ports instead?

Cheers

Depending on your monitors, you can daisy-chain Display Ports together - so one port on the PC or laptop can run 3 screens.

As long as the processor has the Intel Iris XE graphics it can run 3 displays no problem. I think some of the older processors can too, just look at the spec for the processor's graphics.

Just be aware that the SFF PCs only take half height cards & don't have particularly beefy PSUs. I'm not saying that there aren't any half height cards with 3 DP outputs but you might have to hunt around more than for a full height card.

Thanks both.

Just found an Optiplex 7090 which can be customised and add a 3rd display port so negates need for separate card.

Good deal on them but will sleep on it overnight

Not sure what budget you have but this would run 3 screens fine:

You'd need to ensure your displays support daisy-chaining (So 1 DP in and 1 DP out)

We use them at work for this purpose and they're rock solid.
