Hi
I recently started a similar thread about Leeds and had a great response so again, any suggestions greatly appreciated.

This time, me and the wife plan on a night in Harrogate. The last time we stayed was years ago at Rudding Park Hotel. We have not booked a hotel or restaurant yet and would love to hear some ideas.

Our Criteria:

Hotel:
High quality, any size but love boutique style hotels, preferably in the centre, but doesn’t have to be.

Pre drinks/wine/cocktail bar:
Dressy, preferably classy but can be hooray henry,

Restaurant:
We enjoy stylish places where there is a lively atmosphere and the clientele have made a bit of effort.
Not overly fussed about Michelin restaurants, but enjoy good food and can be anything except Japanese or thaii.

Any ideas would be much appreciated, thanks.

Haven't been myself, but did recommend it on another thread just as the hotel was opening and they said it was superb. Grantley Hall between Ripon and Harrogate. https://www.grantleyhall.co.uk/
Used to be owned by North Yorkshire County Council but was sold off and millions spent to turn it into the hotel it is today.

Thanks - we went to Grantley hall just after Christmas (Went to the new RR unveiling event)
A really nice hotel reflected in the price!!!
The restaurant we dined in was great and both bars are lovely.

However we want to be Harrogate (prefferably centre) but no more than a couple of miles out

I stayed in Harrogate a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately not in anywhere which meets your criteria.
However I drank quite probably the finest pint of bitter I've had in 40 odd years here. The food and rooms also suited my purposes.

I think you are selling the town short.
I have obviously done a few searches and there are a few hotels that look great and numerous restaurants – but it’s always nice to get insider information hence my OP

Not my intention, my over riding impression of Harrogate was that it was a nice place.
The above hotel also did one of the best cooked brekkies I've had.

I guess it would depend how high quality you are looking at. There are some very good hotels and restaurants but none that I would say are exceptional.

The best restaurant I've been to is The Orchid, however this is Asia/ Thai so may not be exactly what you are looking for.

Best place in town i've been to that would suit your requirements is William & Victorias at the bottom of Cold Bath Road. Lovely food/service, nice restaurant, was just slightly surprised at the 1 hour 30 allocated table slot! Otherwise would wholeheartedly recommend.

Been to The Clock Tower at Rudding Park, felt Will & Vics offered better food for a lesser price in all honesty.

The Orchid. It’s in the Studley Hotel which might suit your needs.

Fantastic food.

ETA maybe not if not Japenese or Thai. You could order the Chinese things from the menu hehe

I've been here before and think it's great given its not the most expensive place on earth.
Also situated near the town centre so easy to get to the pubs and theatre

Can’t really comment on hotels as I live there. I have only stayed in Hotel Du Vin and Rudding park.

Rudding is 10 mins out the centre not in rush hour and is a lovely independent hotel set in nice grounds with a Spa and golf course. There are 2 restaurants clock tower (a brasserie) and Horto, their more fine dining restaurant.

Restaurants

Stuzzi - my favourite restaurant in Harrogate. This is a more low key Italian restaurant that focuses on food quality. You won’t find carbonara or pizza on their Menu. Think more small plates and street food and 24 hours slow cooked beef shin Ragu. All staff are passionate about all things Italian.

Will and Vics - food is good quality and atmosphere is usually more to the classy side. Not eaten here in a while but there used to be more formal upstairs and casual downstairs.

Orchid - Pan Asian never had a bad meal here but probs off your list due to your requirements

Drum and monkey - Harrogate institution, sea food restaurant. Always great food, lover their cooked oysters and fish pie.

Wild plum - out of town 20 mins walk + bit great lunch / brunch spot. Amazing looking food and does great pancakes.

The tannin level - never eaten here but a few friends are regulars

Threes a crowd - trendy gastro pub (and my local). Good gastro pub standard food. Always a good buzz.

La ferrier - tapas restaurant which we have lunch at occasionally. Never really had any issues.

Sasso- another non standard Italian but good quality food.

The Ivey- standard Ivey chain but classy inside.

There are a number of Mediterranean restaurants in town. Our favourite is Papas. The host is lovely and food is always good.

Bars

Threes a crowd (as above)
Cold bath brewery - next to stuzzi great micro brewery
Little ale house. - small pub but great beer
Fat badger - always good atmosphere
North Bar - another great beer pub

There will be more but just on the train and these are the ones that spring to mind. I will update as I remember.

Thanks everyone – some great suggestions, if you think of anymore please add them (probably won’t be until May now cos just had a last minute couple of nights in London)

Andrew your list is brill – these all look exactly the kind of place we would frequent if/when we lived in Harrogate.

Has anybody dined in FISK? – I thought it looked rather nice on a recent day visit?

Not really found a special enough hotel yet although this place looks quite interesting: https://thechapelhg1.com/ and Hotel du Vin are usually Ok (ish)

If you’re there earlier enough (or the day you are leaving?) then afternoon tea at Betty’s is a must…

Harry – We visit fairly regularly and my wife makes me go in Bettys nearly every time as she loves it.

The food is nice but I must say I think it’s exceedingly over rated and whoever did the last refurb got it completely wrong (especially the basement area, which to me is not pleasant.)

Having grown up in Harrogate some people assume that I must regularly dine in Betty’s. I went once with my Great Aunt when I was about 5 and never dined since, as you say expensive and overrated but good for the tourists.

I do however treat myself to their curd tarts which are amazing.

I've nothing constructive to add except that 8 years ago I stayed in the Majestic and it stands out as by far the worst hotel I've even been in, laughably bad.

Like most hotels, it's probably changed hands a few times since, but it was dirty, tired, and a particularly fond memory was opening the milk pots in my room which turned out to be 8 months out of date.

Never been to that Wild Plum, the fact it's held in high-regard explains the congregation of 4x4s dumped on boths sides of Hookstone Road most lunchtimes.

Another vote for Papa's, not the ultimate in sense of occasion, but the food/service are authentic and of decent quality consistently.

Being in the basement isn't a great experience. Me and my mum prefer going to Betty's at Harlow Carr and if it's a warm, sunny day then sitting outside on the patio is lovely.
