I thought it was very good, except for the directing.
I didn’t ‘get’ the wonky skewed camera angles that were used in indoor shots and just found them an unnecessary distracting irritation.
I haven't watched it yet ( I am in France at the moment) but it might be a nod to 1960's TV production where odd angles and point of view were often - for example The Avengers, Man in a suitcase, Dangerman, The Prisoner, Department S etcI didn’t ‘get’ the wonky skewed camera angles that were used in indoor shots and just found them an unnecessary distracting irritation.
Or I could be completely wrong.....
I always thought of Len Deighton’s Harry Palmer as the best James Bond films, and Michael Caine as the best 007. I was a working class Londoner and Caine was remarkable as most working class characters were played by middle/upper class actors, with all the reality you would expect with that mix. Dirk Bogarde’s Tom Reilly was almost farcical, so Michael Caine as an upper-class officer in Zulu, with Baker, was nothing more than payback. Then we got Alfie and The Ipcress File. It was a revelation. I thought Michael Caine had made Harry Palmer his own and it was with some trepidation I watched ITV’s interpretation.
I loved it and for a number of reasons, not least of which was Joe Cole’s version of the lead. Tom Hollander is suitably deep, and a bit scary, and Boynton’s Jean was, if anything, a bit more of both. Alice was straight out of the film and all the better for it. I don’t think you can make a decision as to the quality of the series on the strength of just the first episode. After all, the production company would put everything into it. But it promises a lot. I like the little throwbacks to the era of the books, with the weird camera angles and more, although not too sure about the hamming it up before the start.
I started to see one or two anachronisms, but then put them out of my mind. It’s not as if they will ruin the series. A good first episode, and I hope they can keep up the quality.

What did you spot? I agree that it won't spoil the series but it can be fun to play "spot the anachronism".Watched Ep 1 last night with my wife. She instantly moans about anything 'Cold War' and true to form she did within 5 minutes, which forced me to play my 'how many s
tty soap operas do I have to endure, we're watching this' card ..... 20 mins in she was rivetted.
Tom Hollander is good in pretty much everything, so I'm looking forward to it.
Was great to see a VW Type 3 Notchback in it, I ran a lowered 1969 Type 3 Fastback as a student in the 90's, marvellously simple car to own and maintain, it's where I learned all my home spannering.
