I am less concerned about cheap things being covered, but if an auto gearbox goes bang - you'll hope that's covered.

Thoughts appreciated, thank you.
On that specific example, even the things that are covered will only be covered if the gearbox (in this case) has been serviced according to manufacturer's guidelines etc etc... You probably know this already.

Otherwise, as you say, a key issue is actually reading the agreement, understanding it, and asking for clarification in the areas which don't seem clear.

Secondly - again as you say - like most insurers their first instinct is to wriggle, so these type of products are best suited to those with the aptitude and appetite to know their rights and persistently argue their case.

Had one when we bought our Golf from a Peugeot main dealer, underwritten by Car Care Plan.

When the car failed its MOT catastrophically on emissions it was a bit of a pain as we took it to a VW dealers which weren't "set up" with them, as a result had to get it diagnosed first, then authorised then pay for it. It was a bit of a pain but we were then reimbursed all but about £50 (which as it was somewhere about £1000 we considered a result).

Failure was the electric water pump btw, undoubtedly could have got it fixed cheaper elsewhere if had known what the failure was (but not *that* much cheaper).

I think it would have been a smoother process had we gone to a different garage who had an account with them (as then they'd have paid the dealers rather than we pay and then get paid back) but we were in somewhat of a bind of it being a very odd failure (no warning lights, no error codes) hence taking it to VW on the basis that they should be the specialists.

Overall however we were happy.

I can't speak for all warranty companies and there have been threads on here where it has been a right headache but I find that the one I deal with most don't care what the claim is for, they're just concerned about whether they're administering the policy correctly. If it meets Ts and Cs then you get paid, if it doesn't then you don't. It's all in black and white so there are no arguments as far as I'm concerned (although I know people will argue until the eagles choke with someone that has no power to do anything!)

My only experience of third party warranties isn't great if I'm honest.

My car was sold with a six month warranty that I extended. On the face of it it looked pretty comprehensive but I found out that they would not cover a part unless it was specifically listed.

The list of what was covered looked good when I scanned through the documentation but it was just wooly enough for them to wriggle out and reject my claim saying that the part was not listed. My eccentric shaft sensor failed, which from my understanding is linked to the camshaft, valves etc - all parts which were mentioned as being covered but they just kept saying that particular part was not listed and therefore I wasn't covered.

I couldn't be bothered arguing so cancelled the warranty and fixed it myself.

Don't get a quote from warrantywise because they'll call you every day for two weeks.

OP it's critically important that you are able to correctly understand the agreement they propose.

The drafting of these things can be complex and - with respect to you of course - can be beyond many lay people, leading them to think they are covered for things that later turn out to be excluded in a way that some might describe as cunning

My gut feeling is that as you asking PH whether or not their product is good, you aren't confident about making that judgement for yourself by reading the agreement. As such you're probably better off avoiding it.

I've got an Autoguard warranty on my R8 and I've made two claims with not so much as a quibble. Not huge claims , but so far, they have been excellent.

It helps to have a garage that is on side, in as much as they will present the quote and then invoice in exactly the way the claims department demand. If your garage is paperwork shy they might not be so good for you. I have a superb garage (that is NOT a VAG dealership. The local Audi dealer quoted me £195 per hour labour...... The warranty maxes at £95+vat per hour. I actually laughed before I got up and left).

Bit late to the topic but I’m trying to lodge a claim with warranty wise for my clutch. My garage won’t deal with them direct so they advised I do the job, invoice them with evidence of the damage parts and then they’ll assess payments. What can I do around it as I’m not that comfortable with paying for the clutch and flywheel then hoping they’ll pay out as when I tried to claim previously for my window regulator they tried to lowball me then and this invoice is a lot more substantial.

You might struggle.

I had my clutch fail on my old mondeo mk3 shortly after buying from a dealer who sold me a warranty. I managed to get everything paid for apart from the actual clutch, they paid labour and flywheel etc. The dealer convinced the warranty company the flywheel had loads of play and took out the clutch early. ( I also got a new turbo on warranty so worked well for me)

What’s the reason you are trying to get them to pay for it? If it’s just a worn out clutch they won’t pay as it is a consumable.
