My M400 has a strange fault. The engine has on three occassions simply cut-out whilst I'm cruising along. It will re-start again and show no further indication of the problem for several days. Did it again last night just out of the blue.

It does not seem to be temperature related and I do not recall losing the electrics ie. power steering still operating etc. Any body had somenthing similar and if so how was it resolved?

I amhaving the 1000 mile service on Friday so if I can give the dealer any pointers that would be a help.

Steve,

Maybe look to the fuel you are using or have the filters checked/replaced? Otherwise maybe the engine map?

Steve,

The same thing happens to my 3R every so often. I've suspected a programming glitch or a sensor problem (i.e., Throttle Position Sensor?). If you get it sorted at your 1,000 mile service, please let me know what was done. We here in the states don't have easy access to service, so it is always helpful if a problem like this is sorted there and the fix is then communicated to the US owners.

Thanks.

Power steering is powered by a pump attached to the engine so you would've lost that, along with brake assistance.

Was the aircon switched on? Maybe worth getting your idle speed increased by a couple of hundred rpm?

I had the ECU replaced at no charge to cure a terrible constant mis-fire after the dealer had checked out everything else. I suspect you'll just have to wait and see what they find on the service and then report back to us.

I believe the problem that he is describing is a total loss of power while driving, not while idling or with the clutch in (that is another issue).

I recall that this was one of the symtoms of an over heating ECU (or faulty). The ECU would just restart itself and thus the ignition would fail for a couple of seconds then get going again.

O.K thanks guys I will let you know the outcome once the dealers had a look at it.

My suspicion is that its ECU related and I'm sure its not an idling problem but we'll see.

I had a problem like this a couple of years ago. I would just drive along and the engine would completely die on me. Sometimes it would restart straight away, other times it would not start for for a while - almost left me stranded on my wedding day. Eventually completely dead. Turned out that an electrical connection on the fuel pump was a bit loose.

I had exactly the same experience as captainH - except for the wedding day bit - turned out to need a replacement ECU when it completely died though!

No answer as yet. The ECU diagnositic did not show anything abnormal and to be honest the car has not repeated the problem for the last couple of weeks or so.
I am beginning to think it might be related to some poor quality fuel or something because since I refilled the car the problem has not re occured.

Anything definate and I will let you know

I had the same problem, ultimately determined as

being due to the fuel line filter (paper) becoming

contaminated with water and fragmenting, which

indeterminately blocks and then releases the fuel

line supply. New filter ex. Newtown approx £11.
