I was looking for an X3 3.0d as a daily to run around in/dog carrier etc. The one I saw got snapped up pretty quick (low mileage/clean MOT history). Change of plan now could be to ditch having 2 cars and just run the 1.
Currently looking at a 2016 335d x-drive touring. Is there a must have spec to one of these? The one I’ve seen looks to be pretty loaded, but as I’ve never had a BMW before, not sure what the script is.
Is a 500 mile range in these realistic for daily duties/commuting?

When I was looking for a 3 series a few years ago (not a 335d though) the following was essential to me:

Pro Nav (preferably with Idrive 5)
The bigger instrument cluster display (which is standard with Pro Nav)
LED headlights (which yours hopefully will have)
Heated seats

The following was nice to have:

Privacy glass
Harman Kardon
Reverse Camera
Folding mirrors
Electric seats
Adaptive Dampers

Got the above (no mention of adaptive dampers-is this possible on the x drive)?
Also seems to have the M Sport brakes, M Sport Plus package, adaptive LED package, sun protection glazing etc. Doesn’t have extended leather, but that doesn’t bother me.
The only thing that bothers me is it seems to have had a few owners (4 owners in 6 years). Is this the norm for one of these? Seems it’s not been liked or maybe another reason?

It could be specced IIRC but with xdrive it’s a bit of a waste as they sit on SE spec springs anyway.

Spec sounds good - in regards to owners if the reg begins with Y there’s a good chance it’s an ex BMW UK car

With recent events though you can easily get 4 owners.

Say 1st owner was BMW UK or it was a dealer demo for 6 months.
Then Someone buys it for 2 years and part ex’s it
Then someone buys it but then it’s no longer being used in covid so sells it
Then someone else buys it but cashes in on the mental used car prices.

As long as it’s been serviced correctly and all seems okay then I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

However if you do a full check on it (like vcheck) it should then show the dates of the keeper changes to see if it’s been changed multiple times in a short period.

I have all of that except HK, privacy glass (don't like it) and adaptive dampers (nice to have but rare). Plus panoramic sunroof which is fantastic and smallest wheels, which I wanted - ex-BMW car. Great car for everything. I get 425-ish on a tank on local journeys plus the odd 50 miles+ A roads/motorway. Have seen 500 but you need a long motorway run and light foot in ecoPro. Make sure it has Apple Carplay - might be a one-off payment if not.

Secondhand offers from WBAC were mental and Sytner wanting it back, so I can see someone falling for that. You've got to get something else...

Edited to say if you just want a very powerful, roomy-ish and relatively economic car with sometimes-handy 4wd it's great. The whole runflats/SE supension!/ride height!/Birds springs argument will rumble on.

Thanks for the above. Looks like previous owner fitted a set of Eibachs to it. Looks really well kept though. Instead of constantly changing my second car every year or two, I might just go for this and keep long term.

Having had a 330d and now on a 640d (same engine as the 335d) the one thing that I would miss if I changed car again is the head up display and heated steering wheel.

I did nearly 80k miles in my 330d and I've now done over 40k in my 640d. According to the cars my 330 averaged 42mpg and the 640 is 38mpg.

I miss my F31 estate but the way prices are I'd be silly changing back.

In my experience 500 miles per tank is doable at legal speeds, my commute is 35 miles of dual carriageways and A-roads, a real 40mpg is about my average. I like being able to be reasonably eco when I feel like it and hooligan when I don't, even then I haven't got below 30mpg on any given journey 'cos you can't hooli everywhere.

I avoided the fancy suspension option when looking for mine as I knew I'd fit AC Schnitzer kit anyway, which is fab btw, as are the other suspension options I believe.

The one thing missing from mine that I'd be tempted by is the panoramic roof, no massive biggie though, one thing to check it has is heated seats as they were an option I believe.

No roof, but I’m not a fan of them anyway. Has heated seats and wheel. Dearer than what I thought it would be, but I suppose that’s to be expected right now.
Taking the long term view here as I’ve had my current daily for 8 years now. Just getting bored of taxing/insuring multiple vehicles in the household now.
Wife’s at home now full time. No need for 3 cars.

I purchased one of these last May after having an E91 330d for 7 years (which we've kept too), took me over three months to find the right car as like a few above I had a must have and like to have spec list.

The one I ended up with has:

LCI version
Black Sapphire Metallic Paint
Black Dakota Leather with blue stitch and msport colour flashes
Reversing Camera
Panoramic Glass Sunroof
LED lights with auto main beam
M Sport Pro Pack inc blue calipers
Innovation Package (HUD, wireless charge, widescreen nav etc)
Interior Comfort Package (heated seats, black panel display etc)
Electric Seats with memory on drivers
Folding Door Mirrors with auto dimming
Various extended storage options
Heated Steering wheel

2 previous owners, was on 46k - now on 50k.

The thing I found was that the nicely spec'd cars tended to be dark colours. I didn't really want black, but the blue and silver ones I viewed looked nice but they were poverty spec. The colour is proving to be a headache to keep on top of, but i'm getting there now I think.

One thing to watch out for is stone rash on the front bumpers and side skirts - every LCI one that I viewed had what I would call excessive damage compared to mileage, but that's how they are, must be soft laquer I guess. I've learnt to live with it now after seeing loads since the same.

Final thing is the MPG figures, I've found a few topics that I'd say list optimistic readings. If I use a tank just locally then it'll do 30mpg on that tank, around 375 miles. Longer runs are much better, I regularly have to do a 190 mile round journey to Manchester from the Midlands, if I hit no traffic then I can 'just' get there and back three times on one tank, that's over 50mpg I think. Didn't really buy it for the MPG though TBH.

Mine is an LCI (Nov 2016 build, bought in Jan 2017 pre-reg’d on 9 miles). I have had 620+ miles a tank on a easy long road trip, last year when we had fuel shortages. Always 500+ miles a tank without trying. 44+ mpg. Rarely use eco-pro. Those who get only 30mph, must be on and off the brakes all the time. It’s not congested here so that may have something to do with it. For hilly areas, having the torque makes it so easy to travel.
Currently on 46k miles, certainly a keeper for me.
It is a silver saloon, it was certainly not poverty spec.
It has:
Standard Cruise control and speed limiter (very useful, and buttons are close to left thumb).
Rain sensor with auto-headlamp (works well)
BMW pro-Nav, and HK audio (must haves)
Split-folding rear seats (a touring will have that, but essential on a saloon - means an estate is not needed, for me at least)
High beam assist (works well - manually doing it seems so archaic)
Heated steering wheel (not essential for me)
Heated seats (occasionally useful)
Manual front seats (liveable with, but electric seats should really be standard)
LED headlamps

We don't live in a hugely congested area, but we do have lots of stop start due to traffic lights which could cause the 30mpg we see when it's only used locally.

When I got an F31 I spent ages looking for one with adaptive dampers. Found one, drove it and then found comfort a bit wallowy and sport too firm. That was an annoying test drive ! Anyhow, buying again HUD would probably be top of my list of things I wanted, I didn't have it on my list when buying, but now I've got it I'm not having a car without it.

Same and on bonnet. Estoril Blue Touring. I forgot about heated wheel, I like that. Also memory driver's seat but rarely use it. The poverty spec ones will be sold on cheapest leasing deal with privacy glass thrown in because its cheap; private orders or maybe ex-BMW usually better spec.

Mind you, watch out for tax - mine goes into next band because of new car price. It hurts.

I saw a 24k mile 2016 car and the stone rash was the same as my 46k mile one.

When I mentioned poverty spec it was related to tourings and not saloons. I saw plenty of saloons in lighter colours with good spec, but as above there appeared to be a load of tourings with the external spec on (shadowline etc) but nothing else at all, and yes, many of those were ex-lease.

Nice! Looks like a shadowline with the external aero kit fitted. Also looks to have aftermarket springs on I'd guess looking at the ride height.

It's a common modification on ones without adaptive suspension, those or the ACS springs.

What are these like in auto form? I know the vast majority will be autos but I did see a manual on Autotrader, and I am vaguely considering one as a replacement for my aging manual e46 330 touring. Are they fun to punt around when roads/traffic allow? I've always like the fact that I could either cruise in my e46 or have some fun. Do they have flappy paddles?

I'm a bit confused by the engines too - I've seen 2 328s, one a straight 6 3.0 and the other a 2.0 (presumably turbo).
