I’m about to have a couple of panels on my car resprayed. The body shop has asked me if any of the detailing products I use are silicon based. I check the ingredients to Garage Therapy’s Sigma, which I often use following a maintenance wash, and it is indeed a silicon based product. They said they mustn’t have silicon in their facilities due to contamination.

My question is this: how comprehensive do I need to be in removing it. Will attacking the car thoroughly with a decent panel wipe pretty much get rid of all silicon? Unfortunately I don’t have time to give the car a full decontamination wash before I drop the car off.

I’d be grateful for any advice from the professionals out there.

It's silicone, not silicon. Go Google what silicon is.

Why not ask the paint shop you are using what they need you to do? You need them to be happy with any removal so there aren't any arguments later if there are issues with the quality of the job.

Yes this ^
Also consult the manufacturer of the silicone product and see what they say.

According to their website it’s silicon dioxide:

“ Sigma is a hybrid spray sealant and detailer infused with the very latest Si02 (aka Silica) raw materials and nano chemistry to provide outstanding hydrophobics, slickness and gloss.”

The problem is often from interior products rather than exterior.
Black to black type sprays get everywhere.
Also some clears/paints are more susceptible than others.
As painters all we can do is wipe the panels and surrounding areas with thinners and panel wipe and try to ensure the interior is air tight when masked.
I've had vehicles where there is so much silicone masking tape won't stick even after countless cleaning applications.
There isn't much you can do unfortunately.

Ceramic coatings sand off and don't normally leave any silicone residue in my experience

Dish soap. Your body shop is bonkers if they think they can keep contaminants out. Just keep it out of the paint booth.

I’m going to hit it with Garage Therapy’s decon shampoo and then go over it with panel wipe. That should get everything off it.
