Set the parameters on search...

5dr, 0-60 under 8 seconds, manual and petrol, £8.5k to spend:

Golf GTi (Mk6)
Kia Ceed GT
Leon FR (1.4)
Outsider - Octavia vRS (only because I don't really like them as much)

Recommendations? Currently have a Ceed GT-Line as a second car, pretty nice actually, don't mind the prospect of getting the same again but faster. However, Leon has a much bigger boot and is cheaper to run (in terms of MPG and tax) always liked Golfs but is the Mk6 any good? Would love a Mk7 but budget doesn't allow at the moment.

Would be looking at a few subtle modifications whatever I get, but probably OEM+ to keep it more or less looking standard.

I'd personally be looking at,

- BMW 130i.... should get a decent M-Sport in this budget
- Leon Cupra.... Used to have a K1 and had a decent turn of pace. Mega tunable.
- Mk2 Megane RS....Would manage a brilliant spec one in budget, bit dated now right enough
- Focus ST.... 5pot noises and I enjoyed mine as a daily
- Mazda 3 MPS.... should get a decent aero within the budget, torquey engines

It would probably be the 130i for me though!

130i but they do look abit bland, Edition 30 golf if you can stand FWD

Need a decent boot size so that rules out 1 Series and Mazda 3.

I obviously forgot a parameter... will be moving on from my 2010 Astra VXR so want at least a couple of years newer, so that rules out the other 3 mentioned really (Golf 2011ish and Kia/Leon are 2014/2015)

Not sure the Mazda 3 has a small boot? Certainly no smaller than a Focus or Leon. How about an Alfa Giulietta Cloverleaf as something a bit different

I prefer older cars these days - less electrickery to go wrong, so I'd go for the 130i and cope with the boot space. It was big enough when I had my 123d.

But if it has to be newer maybe an M135i would work as the boot is a bit bigger than the earlier 1 Series!

Mk6 Golfs don't make very good used buys, they have a few problems like water ingress into the interior and the gen 1/2 EA888 engines they used had problems with cam chain failure that could destroy the engines. By 2013 with the mk7 these problems were addressed. The mk5 might make a better buy, those have the belt driven EA113 engine - just make sure the belt gets changed when due.

Kia Ceed GT should be a lot more reliable, but they seem to be quite heavy iirc?

You should also check out the 1.8 TSI, a bit more to run but they use the good, later EA888 engines, which are strong and respond well to tuning (240 bhp from a stage 1 remap)

I know it's a very boring subject but I'm quite clued up having added this to an important research parameter! This is of course going by AutoTrader size descriptions which can be wrong, so willing to be proved otherwise! But thus far I must go with...

Mazda 3: 300ltrs
Focus: 316ltrs
Leon: 380ltrs

Yeah sorry but the Giuletta does absolutely nothing for me

I do like the 1 Series and considered one before. But this car will have a Multimac in the back, and the way the rear seats are designed, I'd need to get an adapter to push it forwards losing more leg room... so basically ruled them out for that reason.

Just had a bit of a Google, sizes seem to vary depending where you look, Mazda looks to come in at around 340. Boot shape and dimensions are more important than capacity in litres so best to have a look

As far as i'm aware the cam chain issues on the mk6 were addressed by late 2011 so late 11 & 12 plate cars have the revised tensioner.

Also mk5's have both a belt and a chain. The chain is known to get noisy and need replacing on these around 100k, belt every 4 years.

No problem about the Alfa did you know the Pulsar has 385 litres of boot space.

Look at a mk5 over a mk6 golf.
