I have just bought a Wedgewood SE MGF as a project. The car is 2000 and, as I understand it, will have been given colour base-coats before being covered by a clear laquer?

I have stripped-out the car and there is surface rust on the cockpit floor and in the front 'boot' which I am removing with a wire brush before using rust restorer followed by an etch primer. But how do I then cover this with 'colour'? Can I just buy some rattle cans and spray the cleaned areas or will this not adhere properly to the laquer?

If you're using aerosols go for a 2k epoxy and once it has cured give it a key and anywhere else you intend to spray with a red scuff pad or 500 grit and then spray your top coats.

same prep as any paint ....rough it up , red scotch pad will do , then prime and top coat as you wish

If I’m reading it right it seems like the repair areas are inside the car, what sort of finish is there as manufacturers are notorious for skimping on paint for floorpans, it might not have much lacquer at all, pictures would help (as others have said the prep would be the same, key the areas in)

Thanks guys,

So prep is to rough it up, apply 2K epoxy primer followed by 2K epoxy colour coats? Will I be able to get a match (eg repaining a wing) with the original base & laquer?

Also, are 2K aerosols safe to use in a domestic garage - understood that 2K paints required air fed masks.

you would want base and clear top coats

base coat safe with a mask ..2k clear not really but plenty of people use it with a normal mask

anyones guess on the match , has it faded , can the seller be bothered to look at the paint chips/variants etc , some places will have a magic eye machine that can often match close

2k epoxy doesn't contain isocyanate so it's ok with a normal respirator with the correct cartridges.
The colour coat isn't epoxy and neither is the clear.
You can use 1k clear on the floor but it's not very hard wearing but as you'll no doubt be covering it with carpet I wouldn't worry
