A few days ago I made the mistake of buying a Breville Deep Fill sandwich toaster - hateful thing, doesn't handle decent sized bread, oh & "deep fill" is definitely a misnomer, so returned it & replaced it with a Panini press from the same manufacturer.

A distinct improvement, so now can use humongous slices & different types of bread, and more importantly stuff it as full as I like!

So what are PH'ers go to toasted sandwiches?

First one I made was a classic ham & cheese - Warburtons white, cheap supermarket sliced ham, slices of mature cheddar, plenty of sliced tomatoes, plenty of pepper, healthy spreading of mustard on one slice, & a thin spread of mayonnaise on the outer slices to get a nice crispness - was lovely.

Last night's was a panini with slices & chunks of fresh deli-cooked chicken, sliced tomatoes & cucumber, pepper, wholegrain mustard on the bottom, mayonnaise on the top slice - again tasted great.

Tonight I am thinking of warburtons, slices of beef, sliced tomatoes, can't decide between Dijon mustard or horseradish sauce though!

Any ideas welcome smile

Cheese and onion. Not very original I know, but popular for a reason.
Had a brie toasted sandwich the other day but didn't have any grapes, but imagine brie and grapes would be nice.

white bread, cheese and onion with black pepper.

Pickle and tomatoes in a toastie should be made a criminal offence.

I usually discover I have a sandwich toaster every 3 years then I'll eat nothing but toasted sandwiches for 6 weeks before it's put away and forgotten about.

Cheese and ham as you've said, Cheese and tomato, Tuna melt, egg and cheese or plain old cheese and chillies toastie are all my go to before it's put away and forgotten about.

Haggis, cheddar cheese and chilli sauce, ideally on a nice brown bread.

I usually heat the haggis first as you need a nice generous portion.

Bacon, brie & caramelised onion (or cranberry sauce depending on mood)

Me too lick

Liberal coating of margarine on the outside of the bread to make it crisp and golden.

Apparently mayonnaise rather than margarine is the better option for a crispy coating. smile

Thanks for the ideas so far - keep 'em coming smile

Dumb question alert - do you fry off the onions first?

Nope - but mainly because I'm lazy. I usually make toasties when I'm in a rush and need something hot and filling. I'm sure they would taste nicer if the onions were fried off but I rarely have the time.

Local sandwich shop does them on the same hotplate they do the bacon and sausages.
So it adds extra flavour.
I usually have a ham cheese and onion. They get it perfectly crispy using thick white bread they make themselves.
It's pretty amazing.

Ham, cheese two different sorts, very thinly sliced white onion, mix well through one or two eggs season well, pile mixture onto bread, then pop into sandwich maker. Heaven. Just wait till cheese and egg mixture is set fully before devouring and beware its like molten lava so allow cool down before chowing down lo,
