Pre lci/non comp m2 and m4 questions!
Discussion
Hi guys in the market for either a m4 or m2 both pre lci and non competitions. I have a max budget of 30k and can’t source a good/sensible mileage comp vehicle in either for this amount. I’ve got ants in my pants and want to switch cars before my current motor starts costing me more in re insuring, taxing and servicing and quite frankly has much as I know I’ll miss it I just never fell love with it enough. The m2 and particularly m4 was always in my heart but previously couldn’t afford it so opted for the ever popular 4 pot 2.0 turbo charged AWD VAG car, I think you all know what that is lol. Anyhow my main concern is which car will take more of a hit in depreciation, I’m a cash buyer. My current car has only lost £500-£1000 in just over 2.5 years minus obviously the money in threw at it in mods, cosmetics etc but nether the less still a handsome amount tied up in her. My thinking is the m2 is slightly rarer so maybe will take less of a hit but then again it’s the older n55 engine which I ain’t to sure about in comparison to the s55. This will be my first m car, had many BMWs in past but never a full fat m car so it needs to be right. Anything to look out for in either car if buying used? I know about the crank hub issue in the m4 but anything else? Any other weak spots/ problem areas? I may even consider a convertible m4 should the right spec and mileage come my way, who knows though, are the roof prone to leaking like on the e93s? And lastly what’s a must have to get on either model spec wise?
Many thanks
Any input appreciated

From an M4 point of view the residuals on the cab seem weaker just as not so many people want them so take a bit longer to sell.
Spec wise head up display and harman kardon sound are a must and anything is as you choose, you will get different opinions on this. I would l get heated seats also as it’s not standard.
Full leather not extended leather is a much nicer please to be- look out for cars with a leather glovebox that’s how you the the difference.
When the market settles the car will depreciate , if you are worried about it then don’t be as it’s normal, the last couple of years in used cars haven’t been.
Go and get one you won’t regret it.
I would go M4 only because it’s bigger really and I prefer it. M2 is too small for me.
I got an F90 M5 on Friday and had an M4 before so I am an M owner for context.

Many thanks for input mate. The cars I’m strongly considering are a sakir orange cab seems to have all the features you’ve suggested and only 1 previous keeper which is a huge bonus for me as most seems to have 4 plus owners on them which makes me think why have people only hanged onto them for such a short time, maybe due to ongoing issues or maybe they just wanted to experience a m car who knows. There’s also 2 similarly priced AUC M2 in gunmetal grey and a light blue, all 2016 models with same sort of mileage on them. I rather pay a higher price tag with slighty more miles on it and buy from a reputable place if I’m honest. I have to agree the m4 does do it for me more too and the m2 isn’t a great place to be inside however I do feel like it may hold onto its value better due to being less about. I agree used car prices are abit silly at the minute but it works both ways my part ex is also getting strong money for it at the minute so when prices do settle my vehicle will also lose some value, that and the newer Regs will be floating about more so again older cars will take a drop. 30 odd k for a 5/6 year old m4/m2 does seem crazy though. What m4 did you have bud? I bet the m5 is a whole different league in comparison lol I’ve seen a few earlier m5 which fit into budget 2014/2015 models if I’m honest they scare they life out of me due to the sheer size of em haha
N55 vs S55. You need to drive both to compare really. S55 a bit faster and better top end, N55 sounds better and still very quick. N55 attracts cheaper servicing in M2 guise. (basically £200/year servicing budget at franchised dealers). No crank hub issued on N55 stock.
M2/M4. M4 more comfy, better finish, better seats but hardly more space as even the M2 is a proper 4 seater with a boot bigger than a Golf's. M2 is a bit more nimble as shorter wheelbase.
It depends on your attitude towards warranty but around £30k should secure a DCT M2 AUC if you're happy with 40k miles +.
You would need more for a manual though as they're rarer. Which is where my money would go for minimum depreciation.

Thanks for input bud, all valid points you make. The m2 certainly ticks my boxes on the exterior it’s just the interior looks abit meh in comparison to the m4. Almost looks cheap tbh, a 240i m sport looks better inside imo lol has much as I’d love a manual it wouldn’t suit me living in the city, lots of stop start traffic I’d eventually fry the clutch. Is the dct a good box? I hear it can be abit grumpy esp on cold starts and in comfort mode but comes alive once in sport plus? I am looking at cars with 40K plus miles on them which ain’t great for spending such a fair whack of cash on a car, I’d rather buy a mint car with fewer owners and higher mileage then a cheaper one with less miles but more owners on her and from a ropey dealer or privately. I have a daily driver for all my bits so I shouldn’t put to much mileage on it myself, my current car has only seen 11/12k in 2.5 years lol Just doesn’t give me the feeling of I’ll just go out for a drive in her on a Sunday afternoon just for a giggle, that’s what I think a m car can offer me
Go and drive them both, then you will know what you want and refine your search.
Don’t be put off by 4 owners on a 6 year old car. A lot of these are weekend cars and change hands each year.
I only had my M4 9 months but I miss it the most of all the cars I have had until last Friday when my F90 M5 arrived.

On an M car I would be buying in the network for sure just for the 1 year warranty.
Me too although I would conduct the same precise due diligence as for a private car and wouldn't assume that because it is advertised as AUC it necessarily has FSH for instance. Very true point, from a warranty point of view going with AUC makes sense. Imo though doesn’t make for a minter, dealers shift stock in and out in mass stock so not unusual for a few ropey ones to come about, example is years ago a friend part exed a 3 series e92 he didn’t care for his car much and it ended up at my local dealer with 2k on top of what he part exed it for. A specialist and reputable garage would tend to only get clean examples in, generally if they stock nice cars and have good reviews they should in theory be enthusiasts themselves. Who knows though lol condition is everything as is maintenance records
I went manual M2 after looking at M2s and M4s. Partly because i prefer the M2 shape as it's more squat and aggressive ,and it's less common than the M4s.
The M2 has a much higher residual value on PCP for a similar age/mileage, so that helped the decision (i didn't take PCP but used it as a guide).
I'm very happy with it, but am getting slightly worried about an impending drop in value, but trying to predict the future is so hard with everything that's going on. As it is, i can afford it, i like it, and it fits my needs, so it stays.
Regarding warranty. I enquired about this with BMW and it's a flat rate across all //M cars for a given mileage, regardless of complexity. An M2, especially in manual guise, is much less complex than an other //M cars. I have had two M135is and they've both been bulletproof. This helped me decide that going for an AUC car wasn't as important as the headline price and condition.
For the record i paid £32k for my 2016 car with 48k from a non-franchise well respected dealer with a 6 month warranty, which is about £4k-£5k more than i would have paid pre-covid. BUT we got about £2k-£3k more for our focus ecoboost than i had estimated, so that softened the blow somewhat. I would expect to get about £28k for it now (6 months later) on 52k miles if i sold privately.
Looking at the value of M135i/M140I/etc, they're holding firm at £10k for the very leggiest/oldest versions, with around £20k for a nicely spec'd M140i with 30k-40k miles of a similar year to my M2. I think as long as these stay strong then it's a good sign for M2s, as there will always be a decent gap in price between them.
I'm really hoping that if i keep mine for another 4-5 years that it will still be a 20k car, even with 70k-80k miles. I can cope with that. Anything more is a bonus!

20 year old E46 M3 with more miles than that seem to start at £13k so yes I would like to think so particularly if you allow for another 4-5 years of inherent inflation.Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
