After a very long time using 4G modem, BT have finally upgraded the village exchange and I've ordered Fibre. got a little carried away and for the full fat option of 900mbs FTTP.

As i understand it will only be as fast as the devices using it ,,, so what can i do to ensure that i do indeed get the full effect ?
There will be a smattering of phones
PS/5
XBOX S
some tapo smart plug's
Sky box
plus my old PC with wired connection to a couple of powerline adapters ..

all using the BT smart hub

You'll want to hardwire any device you want to see 900Mb from.

Powerline won't support that kind of speed. The actual speed will depend on the wiring in your house but you won't reach 900Mb.

You might find 900Mb more than you can make use of tbh.

All true. I have gigabit FTTP and I've never been able to max it out. The great thing is (e.g) being able to stream multiple HD movies and download a Linux distro without anything affecting anything else, e.g. my wife's watching Netflix at the moment;

Install structured cabling to bedrooms, offices, gaming & media rooms back to a central location where you can also connect to your fibre presentation.

Install a prosumer home network and access points with wifi6 such as the unifi or Omada platforms.

Replace all phones, tablets and laptops with wifi6 enabled devices

The thing I often say to clients, I’ll say to you: “If it doesn’t move, cable it.” This gives wired devices maximum performance, and leaves more WiFi bandwidth for things that do move. A desk with a monitor gets cables, even if you use a laptop at the desk.

Where you have to use WiFi, install WiFi 6 APs - cable them rather than using Mesh if you can.

Absolutely. A second hand Dell USB-C docking station is worth its weight in gold imo. Tidy twin 32" monitors are £130 ex-industry off eBay.

Meshes with Ethernet backhaul are a thing, too!

Possibly I'm a bit jaded, but do they actually manage 1 gbps in normal use?

Thanks all, i had suspected the need to hardwire.
I'm not adverse to doing that, just will mean the need to redecorate as I go smile

If you’re re-wiring the place, do take care with bend radius of cables and proper termination of them.

With respect to the termination, some of the pics posted above show traditional “punch down” connectors. Personally, and especially if you don’t have access to any test kit, I’d avoid punch downs and instead go for toolless keyless jacks which make it much quicker and easier to get good connections. Something along the lines of this: https://www.comms-express.com/products/excel-cat6-... , obviously with faceplates etc bought to match.

They are, but you need tri-band mesh to not use WiFi bandwidth for backhaul. That's a little bit expensive to say the least.

I’m upgrading to these also, the Devolo ones which are WiFi 6 enabled. My new Friztbox router mesh seems to work well with these.

I’ve gone with 300 mb/s full fibre as I reasoned it would be more than enough. Also you only need about 35 mb/s to each device to watch a 4K movie, not 900mb/s to each device. I’ve used powerlines for years and they’ve served me well. I’ve got a drawer full of the things from various generations.

Many folk will say you should now use cat6a cable to future proof your install, personally I’m not convinced it’s needed in a domestic installation, it can be harder to terminate, has greater bend radius, more expensive and needs specialist test equipment to confirm 10G speeds.

Cat5e works with the new 2.5 & 5G standards and reports of many installations achieving 10G over 30-40m domestic distances.

I’d run at least two cables to each point, more if a media, gaming or office location that hopefully saves on adding a bunch of extra switches in those destination points.

Obviously before you start also think about any extras such wifi access points (on the ceiling?), cctv, hardwired phones, etc these will also utilise cat5e too.

At present a 4K video stream is about 25-30mb/s and even if you doubled it an some for upcoming 8K to 70mb/s you would easily fit multiple streams over a 1G network (1000mb/s) plus wfh tasks.

Hardwiring is a great choice not solely for speed but also for stability and coverage but it does take some installation and needs some planning & consideration, it’s not just bunging in some cables.

kind of depends on the electrical wiring rather than the powerline kit itself but it is possible

I have the AV2000 from TPlink, 2000Mbit advertised speeds, but wouldn't really push past 200Mbit.
In the end, i ran CAT5e to make use of the 1Gbps FTTP connection.

This was in a 1970s house, which had a whole house wire refub in the 1990s.

Depends if they are on the same ring for me. Our house has a real dog’s breakfast of rings and radial circuits.
