Is anyone in the UK going to be directly within your business at a financial disadvantage with the situation in Russia? I'm not talking about oil here.

Do you import stuff thats unique and now just not going to be available to put food on the table?

Not currently.

But my last company had 100% of it's tech people in St Petersburg. Not sure how that will pan out. They were paid in Euros.

I have been using birch plywood for making kitchen cabinets, turns out it all emanates from Russia, including the Finnish which uses imported logs from Russia.

I'm going to start making them from solid American Ash instead, bit more expensive but it looks beautiful and I'm sure my customers are going to love it.

There are a huge amount of forestry products that come in from Russia. Currently their are no sanctions on these products. Perfect time for us to push homegrown timber and encourage tree planting so that we are less reliant on foreign imports

There may not be any sanctions, nevertheless birch plywood is virtually unobtainable at the moment, and what can be got isn't really fit to use. I take your point about home-grown timber, and I would like to use if and would if it wasn't pretty expensive, unlikely to be properly kiln-dried and cut a little on the thin side. Also of course the trees aren't so big so the sections are smaller.

In general I approve of English products and would like to use more, but then I would have to pass the extra cost on to my customers who then might choose to buy German kitchens.

I agree, but there's a bit of a leadtime with trees.

Canada, and British Columbia in particular, have lot of trees; could we get them from there instead? Slightly longer journey but politically more stable. And Scandinavia is quite well off in the forestry department, being almost entirely made of trees.

Yes, we are affected in fit out / construction massively.

The procurement department were tearing their hair out before this kicked off just with the constant price increases over the last year, but now the increases are bigger, the shortages more severe and for our company where we are fitting out the interiors of high end commercial projects in London everything needs to be FSC.

FSC have removed their certification from anything sourced from Russia which means we can't even use it if we could buy it.

Pricing new jobs is also a nightmare as no supplier is willing to hold prices longer than 24hrs on any sheet material for now.

Edited to add - we have also been told today that one sheet material manufacturer in Europe who have temporarily closed 2 production facilities due to the high gas prices in the last 2 weeks. (i cant recall which company it was)

We have a contract 1/2 way through building a plant for St Petersburg, no idea if and when or how we will get paid.

Pretty ridiculous we are reliant on the Ukraine for these regardless of war.

And yet only a few years ago we were delighted at the 'global village' and how we could get stuff cheap from anywhere. 'Making stuff is dirty and old-fashioned' we said. 'Let's sit in environmentally-friendly eco-flats and play on devices instead, that's the future'.

Why? Ukraine has some of the most fertile soil in Europe. We're pretty reliant upon China too...

Makes sense to plant tree on poor, uncropped land. Unfortunately the powers that be are planting them on prime agricultural land. Food security has never been more important...

Would OSB be considered as an available alternative?
