Looking for a quick bit of advice if possible.

Since the arrival of a tiny human, me & the misses take a fair few photos and seem to be eternally sharing what we take with each other manually.

I'd like to back up these photos for safekeeping but also like for us both to have shared access to the photos. The idea being we can both back-up and then download from one place.

The easy way to do this is sharing google photos (so we both have access to the same 'cloud') but i've never done this and would like for it to only be Photos that are shared.

Would a network attached/WiFi Hard drive be another answer?

Thanks

Might help if you told us what phones you are using…

Google Photos.

I had the exact same problem and this solved it - it uploads photos from phones immediately and organising them is super easy.

I have a load of the Google Nest Home Hubs too that pull pics from selected albums and broadcast them randomly to the screens too so they're always live.

You can share folder albums too so family members across the world have live access too.

Storage is cheap above the minimum tier as well.

Thought as much, i already pay for the additional storage. Can we share certain folders only etc?

Because different platforms have different options, if I’d suggested using iCloud and shared albums on the Apple platform it would have been a waste of time for a android user…

I’d say as already suggested Google Photos is a good bet.

You can have a Shared Album in Google Photos which other people can add photo's to - would that work?

Create an album, add your family photos to it, then share it with the Collaborate option enabled

An alternative to google photos is Dropbox which can be set up to auto upload photos from your phone when it's on wifi, and you can then share that folder with family members, or more sensibly drag just the ones you want to share to another shared folder.

You share albums rather than folders, but yes its totally controllable and very easy.

TBH the apple solution is nowhere near as easy or slick as the Google offering. That comes from someone with a wholly apple household / family who is (other than photos) tied completely into the apple eco-system.

Worth adding that with some android phones you get unlimited upload/storage with google photos (or you used to)

Google Photos. Free to an extent (I pay for 100GB for £1.49 a month which gets you high res images) and you can share albums, host them, create new ones - its really easy and simple and no more backing up your phone to a HDD when you replace it, its all in the cloud and syncs really quickly so you can access all your photos on your PC as soon as you've taken them on your phone.

Sharing online is easy too. Right now I'm on a laptop but all I have to do is go to https://photos.google.com/ find the pic I want, download and upload to this thread, or just use Google as hosting. No downloading stuff off your phone or uploading to Dropbox. You can set all photos to automatically upload to your account.
