Hi, not sure if this is the right section but have a question regarding VAT and Duty on a car from the US that is over 30 years old, but not pre-1950. The gov.uk website suggests that pre-1950 are free from VAT and Duty, or very much discounted, and I’ve read in two separate places about this also being the case for anything over 30 years old, where you pay no duty and only 5% VAT. I can’t see anything official on the gov.uk website saying this, anyone got a link to some up to date info on it?

Thanks.

There are lots of bikes on ebay imported from US, maybe ask one of those vendors.

One thing to watch for is the VAT and duty is generally payable on the purchase price plus the shipping cost, which might be a big chunk of the cost.

Failing that, ask the VAT people, they are normally very helpful.

I have brought a few in, I think its 5% on cars over 40 years old but it might be 30. I used a shipping company that did all the paperwork and it was very easy. Shipping and import (not the HMG fees) was about 2k but I haven't done it for a while as the GBP is too low and also every man and his dog is buying every RHD car in the states thinking they can make a profit!

Its a lot more difficult for modern cars if they dont have the right type approvals.
