Anyone else finding this? The additional security hoops we have to jump through at getting ridiculous.

I recently had a run in with Nationwide. Couldn't establish a new payee without a card reader and pin, so had to order these causing several weeks delay in a simple payment. Then I find once you log in, establish the details, get the security code via the card reader and hit 'confirm' their system takes you back to the log in page and you have to do it all again. Madness.

Now it's Paypal causing grief. They demand an automated security phone call to make a payment (to ebay in this case) but the phone number they propose to call is out of date. But, you can't update the phone number without logging in and you can't log in without the security code they will provide via an automated phone call to the number you need to change. Do they have a brain cell at all I wonder?

Sorry for the rant. Oh for an easy life.

To whom though, aren't they all making life more difficult?

They all have extra security around on line banking now, I’d think. Do you use an app, or the bank’s website? App based banking should be reasonably straightforward, using their website often less so in my experience…

It’s all banks who are legally required to ensure that strong customer authentication is in place to make payments services more secure and safer

I use their App on my phone.
Everything takes seconds now.
Change your Bank, life's too short.

Yes, but it isn't going to change so you may as well get used to it, and you won't find it any different at any other bank.

We've got relationships with a number of banks. More than most. They all hate us because we want to do things like... banking... and cannot seemingly achieve basic tasks. They are all rubbish.

Which lead Paypal to create a catch 22, effectively denying the customer access to their account. Thankfully I don't have any money held in it and just use (used) it for ebay purchases.

It’s easier than ever in my experience, particularly with the online banks. I use Starling, and have heard good things about Monzo and Revolut. As long as you can use a smartphone it’s very simple.

That’s your mistake - try their app. Once you’ve jumped through the initial hoop of registration, it should make life easier. That said, I don’t know what Nationwide’s app is like - I’m with Barclays.

Re: PayPal and the phone number, sounds like you’ve neglected to update that at some point, and now you’re in a situation where you can’t? Suspect you’re going to have to try and talk to someone, somehow!

One who doesn't require a card reader. Halifax don't. I don't think Barclays do but not 100% sure

I hate card readers. They are not needed for secure banking.

Why is it PayPal’s fault that you didn’t bother to update your phone number. And a four word google points you to many places on their site where they tell you how to fix your mistake:

They absolutely do - it’s called pin sentry. You either use the reader, or the pin sentry option within the Barclay’s app. Admittedly the app doesn’t require you to use your card, but it generates the same sort of authentication number you’d get from the card reader.

Devil's advocate if someone who isn't you and who doesn't have the phone number PayPal have on record for you is trying to login to your PayPal account what should PayPal do?

Ahh scratch Barclays then. Halifax don't though.

Wait until you try working overseas for 6-8 weeks at a time, with no access to UK mobile number.....

Thankfully I can still approve purchases with my Natwest App, but I can't use my Natwest issued Mastercard as that needs a text message to confirm. Bloomin annoying!

Never had a problem with Barclays and of anything I’ve found things have become easier over the last couple of years. The auto-insert for response codes on the iPhone makes 2FA pleasantly straightforward.

For balance, using the app I don’t need to use the pin sentry feature that often. Think it’s only when making a payment to someone who’s details I haven’t stored. It’s a very minor inconvenience compared with the added security. smile

Yes, they tell you how to change the phone number but you have to be able to log in to do so and I can't. Catch 22.
