Just getting used to my 996TT and was wondering if the following is normal:

1. At lower revs the exhaust note is not much more than a bassy drone, quite noticeable from inside but very uninspiring. As the revs pick up it takes on a more interesting mechanical note, but it still pretty muted. There is also a raspy (almost buzzy) period very briefly as it goes through 1500 rpm or so, which is less noticeable when warmed up. Is that what others have found (I may just be spoilt because I've previously had a Griff and a Mas 3200 - obviously getting quieter as I age).

2. At low speeds over certain types of bumps there is a rattle from the front - almost like the steering rack but nothing can be felt through the wheel. I've heard that front diffs can rattle a bit, but does this sound normal?

1 sounds pretty normal, 2 doesn't.
I can't believe the 996TT leave the factory sounding like they do and then for Porsche not to offer a sports exhaust option is criminal.

I drove one on saturday after getting out of my 997(with sports exhaust) and was completely uninspired with the sound it made. However I then burried my right foot.................

Wouldn't buy any modern Porsche without a sports exhaust, they sound too ordinary.

Reply I agree.

my 996TT sound muted (despite registering 101db outside). My previous cars have had V8's and even BMW M power flat sixes sound better so yes too muted far far.

The rattle from the front doesn't sound right !!

Note to self, get sports exhaust ....

I had a metallic rattle from the front diff/area on my previous TT, it went back to the OPC and they even sent an engineer out to it( two cars at the OPC making the same noise).
A few months later they sent me a letter saying it was within normal Porsche expectations/limits !!So I sold it.

I now have new TT and this at one point made the same noise within 100 miles, I removed the Jack and tool kit and now it doesn't make the noise!!?

Is the TT new, if not there`s a possibility the suspension is not oe and has a front strut incorporating a helper spring which rattles when the slack is taken up, or as mentioned previously it`s simply the toolkit moving around.

Could be front anti-roll bar coming loose from its mountings - I had a very similar noise, no noticeable effect on steering, worse at low speeds (particularly over speed humps) clank/rattle noise. Take the wheels of and look at the ARB and see if there is a dirty mark where it is knocking against the chassis.

I've just switched (within the last week) to a 996TT from a C4S with Carrera Power kit which had a wonderful raspy exhaust note, not sports exhaust but still great. The TT is much more muted but the performance is sensational.

I used to find the C4S very easy to drive into the rev limiter. For reasons which I don't yet understand, it's not the same in the TT, I tend to change up in good time.

The clutch action on the TT is much better as well...

There's so much torque in the TT that changing up earlier feels better...
