When I was younger I would drink myself to oblivion at the weekends. Hangovers were a badge of honour. A few years ago my drinking dropped considerably as the hangovers were starting to last two days, then for health reasons I gave up completely.

I used to be able to stay up all night…now I’m usually in bed by 11 pm.

My taste in films used to be quite broad, covering Arnie’s latest through to art house films. However recently I’ve found the latter to be too depressing most of the time, whatever their artistic merit, so mostly watch blockbuster fluff with my daughter or romcoms!

Politically I was quite radical but I’ve become cynical and apathetic.

I used to speed a lot and sometimes drove or rode somewhat recklessly. Nowadays not so much.

I expect this is all just normal signs of ageing. No doubt soon I’ll be buying a Honda Jazz and spending lunchtime at one of the local Garden Centres.

So have you already succumbed or are you still the same as you were in your youth?

My regular heavy drinking days are long gone

Reassuringly, one the rare occasions I go out with my son and his mates on a session, I destroy them, they're out of the game and either unconscious or acting like tits before I've even had my first piss.

Then the first one up and about in the morning, sually with very minor hangover.

But I prefer just a couple of drinks from time to time rather than the 3 day benders of old

All of the above, but the alcohol thing is quite marked. I don't drink much, but when I do I tend to go to sleep on the sofa and am un-wakeable. I am in my 50s.

Got up this morning and said to my wife that I can't do late nights any more.

I see you posted at 1 am though.

Mentally no, I‘ve not become a lightweight. I have learned (or I am starting to have to accept) that my body can’t quite keep up with what my brain asks of it. In the past I would just destroy myself at sport… now the recovery takes so long, it’s kind of stupid! I used to take pride in crushing my body, now… not so much.

Regards driving/riding… I now push it the same as I ever have, probably even more at times… because I know a lot more…

I never was a massive boozer… so no change there. I inherited a weaknesses… hangovers last 3 days. That put an end to my boozing aspirations at a fairly young age.

Not posting from the UK so wasn’t 1 am for me. My time 1 am I was tucked up in bed. To be fair, wife daughter and dog all go to bed earlier than me so I’m the wild one in the house.

I used to consume a very impressive (if you’re impressed by that sort of thing) amount of alcohol on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday night in my teens/early 20’s. Now I’ll have a pint or two a handful of times each year.

Last year we hosted a family BBQ and my brother asked where the beers are kept. It didn’t even occur to me to get some in. Considering how much my life revolved around nights out in my younger years I surprise myself how disinterested I am in drinking now.

Driving - I used to have cruise control set to 97 until my first child was born when I reevaluated. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy the odd blast every now and then, but my general pace of life has slowed down.

And yes, I quite enjoy a garden centre too. laugh

Lol, youngsters are crap drinkers. The young guys (early 20's) at work tell me of their exploits, usually they are still ruined the day after when back in work, I ask them what they were drinking and it is never that impressive.

I don't have heavy sessions anymore, it hit me the day after a wedding when I was 40, I was ruined for the whole day, I had never felt so bad after a session, I can still drink a fair amount but I don't go mental now.

Interesting that replies are focussed on alcohol consumption.

Did no one read further than the first paragraph or is that really he most significant aspect of growing older?

Drank a bottle of JD last night amongst other stuff with our neighbours. Rolled home at 03:00, next door, spent 90 minutes praying to the great white china bowl and fell asleep on the downstairs toilet floor. My lovely wife put a pillow under my head and covered me with a blanket, she’s such a keeper.

When will I learn that binge drinking is damaging for the health….

I drive slower nowadays as I don’t want to attend yet another speeding course. I hate night driving now.

I prefer good feel factor and comedy films.

Yes I have turned into a lightweight but it worries me no one bit.

Does the right hand side of your gut just under the rib cage ache? Does it do that often.

Find now that a drink and don't do anything like I used to, in fact bottle of beer or a couple of shorts and I go to sleep BUT then can't stay asleep, have a bad night and wake up early and tired. Haven't touched anything for a week.

Can relate to most of what the OP said.

I can't drink much these days but then I never did get into the habit of drinking a lot even when younger.

Staying up late I'm all right with, it's getting up early I'm no good at! Then again, I never was.

Having attended my FOURTH SAC last week, I think my speeding days are over.

On the other hand, I did promise myself years ago that I would never own a front wheel drive car, listen to MOR 'music', watch cricket or become interested in gardening, and am still determined not to.

I’ve never been a big drinker, but with a local spoons, and having long-since been employed, I spend many a happy hour in the pub supping a cheap pint or three whilst writing my book, and browsing a few websites.

Self-employed work fits nicely around it as I please.

Many years ago it was the typical Friday/Saturday night and then a couple Sunday lunchtime with the lads, nowadays it’s pretty much every day, but just me alone with my thoughts. I like it this way.

Chicks don't give a flying fig which wheels are driven, but they do like a tidy garden.

it's a phenomenon called becoming an adult,

although many wrinklies report remnants of juvenalia remain, like boppiing to sham 69 and driving like the granada driver in the sweeney

I am definitely a full time lightweight now.
Gave up alcohol when I was 59 years old, the hangovers were lasting two days!
Used to be interested in politics but now could not give a toss, they are all a bunch of self serving liars.
My main hobby has always been motorbikes, but now only do about 2500 miles a year, used to do 10,000 until a stupid blind cow decided I was in her way on a roundabout and punted me off, now my left knee is only good for about 50 miles before starting to ache, a few years ago I would have just taken a couple of painkillers and carried on.
Last week on Friday my wife and I went out for a meal with some friends, meal booked for 7.30 pm, we were home by 9.30 and so was everyone else, we are a bunch of saddos.
We were also invited to a party on the Saturday night, no chance of me going, are you crazy woman, go out two nights in a row!
I have given up on holidays, too much palaver and faffing, wife has a week or two abroad with her cronies and we just have weekends away in this country together.

Maybe I am just a miserable old git really.
