How to turn off motherboard's in-built sound card
Discussion
On a DELL, press F2 when the BIOS screen appears (the one before the Windows XP boot screen). This will let you into the BIOS configuration where one of the pages will allows you to disable the on board sound card. Then Save and Exit, machine will reboot and to all intents and purposes, the built-in sound card will not exist.

Just been through this with a new PC but in reverse. I couldn't find anything in the BIOS or the mobo manual on how to enable/disable the integrated audio sub-system. In the end it turned out to be a little bit of ignorance on my part.
If the machine is "recent" you may find that option is disguised under the banner of "Azhelia" super-I/O.
