Having returned to a PAYE position just over 2 years ago after many years doing other things I’m just trying to get my head around if my tax code should reflect my contributions to my workplace pension as I’m a higher rate tax payer.

Last year I had a pension adjustment, increasing my tax free allowance but this year I haven’t - despite having significantly increased my contributions. Not having had a workplace pension before I’m just trying to understand how it get re-elected especially as many many years ago I missed out getting the additional allowance (pre workplace pensions)

TIA

Workplace contributions usually come off your top line - so no requirement to adjust personal tax code. Likewise, personal tax code is usually adjusted to account for pension contributions to a private scheme (SIPP) where additional tax relief is due.

It would depend on wether or not the pension contributions are via salary sacrifice.

If they are then it’s all dealt with.

If not, then you would be claiming the extra relief via self assessment and this may impact your tax code.
