08 Yaris 71000 miles.

Recently when going over bumpy roads at over 30mph I hear a fairly loud rattle/knocking sound.

It's not the plastic undertray, it's also not the heat shield as I've managed to secure them so they don't move.

Any ideas?  All I can think is that the exhaust is moving around but I've checked and it seems fine

Could be anything.
Bush gone in suspension somewhere?

TBH, I'd take it to a backstreet garage, have it on a proper ramp and it will probably be obvious.

Does the car lean to one corner? If so could be a spring broken.

All new springs.

Took it for a drive, was rattling around lots, applied the brake lightly and it stopped. Did this a few times too, every time i'd apply the brake it would go silent.

When I go to the mechanic should I ask them just to replace the slider pins ? As the pads and discs are new.

Thanks

No ask the mechanic to diagnose.

I've checked all 5 mounts, all seem to be nice and fresh. I lubricate them every few months with silicone too ( which did actually cure another rattle )

I'll take it to the mechanic as per the advice above and let them look for me.

The big clue is that as soon as I apply the brake, even lightly, it stops completely. So could have something to do with the pins or the pads.

Does sound like a bolt is rattling around, sometimes it's quite loud.

I have checked the calipers, discs and pads ( quick inspection without taking anything off ) and there's no movement at all.

I'm booked in with the mechanic this friday so hopefully they can fix it. I'll stick to local necessary journeys until then.

Took the car down yesterday  and they said the front bottom ball join has play, so so replaced the front lower arm.

Even though Arm pin and bush was replaced 5 months ago.

It is still making the noise so not happy I just spent about £140 for that.

I'll be taking it back down this week

So, you spent £140 to fix something that needed fixing & aren't happy because that wasn't the problem that you thought it was?

If things need fixing but aren't the problem are you going to tell them to ignore them then?

Cars are a group of around 30,000 parts moving around in close proximity to each other & frequently if you look hard enough you will find several that need fixing.

When they need fixing you have to fix them & it is always possible that the one you found isn't the issue you thought it was.

I feel your pain but that is the truth about cars unfortunately.

If you find a problem, it needs to be fixed, if nothing else to rule it out.

That is a very good point to be fair. I'm just surprised the arm needed replacing as it's pretty much new.

In your opinion what would you do ? I just want to be on the safe side as if its coming from the brakes then it could be potentially serious.

All you can do is keep looking until you find it, perhaps take someone for a drive round who knows more about cars & can possibly help narrow down the area affected from the passenger side.

Does it have rear brake discs or are they drums? I had a parking brake assembly fall apart inside a rear disc causing the symptoms you describe.

Right.
Had a look today at it seems as though the " stone shield " behind the disc was rattling around and making contact with it. Moved it away gently and now it seems to have disappeared.

Will keep an eye on it

Noise is quieter but still there.

I'll go back to the mechanic and see if they can help.

Thanks anyway !

Mechanic had a look, nothing loose or wrong. However, they have stripped, cleaned and lubricated the brakes. Noise is now gone
