Depends....

I am sure Julian will correct me, but if it's only marginally increased, then improving your diet and exercise can help. Lots of fresh fruit and veg, low fat products, less butter/cream/cheese in your diet, less red meat.

I am not sure about these new benechol products, they may help, but am not sure.

My mums side of the family have majorly high cholesterol levels, (my mum has to take drugs to keep her under control), so I've been getting mine checked since I was in my early 20s.

The first time I had it checked, it was 6.1, but I smoked, didn't watch what I ate too carefully and did minimal exercise.

I'm 35 now, don't smoke (stopped 6 years), watch what I eat and exercise three times a week. I had my cholesterol checked 5 months ago and it was 3.9 (overall reading).

So depending on how high your levels are, diet and exercise and give up smoking (if you smoke) would be my advice.

My dad was told he had high cholesterol and was told to change his lifestyle. He didnt change a thing, carried on eating and drinking what he liked but before they checked him a second time he fasted for 24 hours (didnt ask why) and they said his cholesterol was fine and obviously the changes suggested had worked.

There are many medical things I will worry about as I get older, but cholesterol will not be one of them.

Put olive oil instead of butter in the pan when you cook your steaks.

The best a diet will do is reduce it by 10% or less.

High cholesterol is an increased risk factor in getting heart problems. BUT it is only factor. Other include blood pressure, weight, smoking, exercise, diet and family history. Out of all of these the one you can't control, family history is the worse. So high cholesterol (to a point) by itself isn't too much of a problem.

I'm 45 and carry a few excess pounds. Given the current high profile obsession with cholestrol, I mentioned to my GP at a visit a few months ago that I'd never had a test and asked if I could have one.

I rang the surgery the following week for the result. It was 4.7

I asked him what that meant.

He said "Well normal is anywhere between 3 and 7 and we don't worry unduly about people with up to 10 unless there's some family history of diabetes or heart problems".

Given that he's been my GP for 26 years and he's managed to cure or mend everything I've presented him with. I trust his judgement more than I'd trust fing Lulu

"High" cholsterol is not enough of a diagnosis.

There are two types. HDL and LDL.

LDL clogs your arteries, HDL hoovers LDL up.

You need to get your HDL/LDL ratio.

Good luck.

Apparently, according to those in the know (i.e. not me !) once you've opened a bottle of red you are supposed to store it in the fridge to stop bacteria growing (and it turning to vinegar) ... like you would any foodstuffs.

As long as you let it warm up before consuming of course

I opened this one yesterday ...

If you don't like olive oil to cook with almost as good is rapeseed oil, but that comes cheaper if you buy the supermarket's own brand of vegitable oil.
Also all the omega 3 types of fish are very good, dark oily fish, sardines, pilchards, salmon, & mackeral nice smoked.
This is what I have just been told by my Hospital dietician, I am diabetic an they called me in for the same reason. the other answers you have cover it ok, but you might ask your doc if you would benifit from an asprin a day, I am on a small dose.
Hope this helps you.
