Thinking of ditching Virgin and going for a broadband only package.

No working rooftop Aerial, so looking for an Internet connected free view box, that doesn't require an aerial, and plays all the UK free viewing channels, preferably with a recording function and epg etc

Is there such a thing, or do I have to go down the chromecast / firestick / roku / android box route? Or is that essentially the same thing anyway?

Saw the thread where someone wanted a setup for a room without a TV point, agonised for several seconds about whether to bump that, but his solution was no good to me (sky go). Some of the other stuff suggested might well be duplicating things, but there you go...

I don’t think it exists, which seems odd really.
I’d be in the market, but going aerial freeview & prime/netflix/britbox/disney+ when my Sky goes in a few weeks, after 20 odd years.
I tried the side loaded freeview app in an old firestick, but it was rubbish.

Precisely this.

Re the fire stick I think (or hope) that things are much improved now, and it won't be a massive faff to (a) setup and (b) turn on and use in 2 seconds, like you do with a traditional box

Plex is my friend, I am led to believe?

Kapang seems quite good too from the video review I've seen (although probably not unbiased) >> https://youtu.be/-El-UOD2BM0

I’ll look at those, thanks.
I have a decent aerial here though so the standard freeview is fine.
I did try freeview on firestick just a few weeks ago, but it looked like a bodge. I couldn’t find a genuine freeview app.
I’m not interested in buying any other hardware to give me the free stuff.

Freeview + the other apps gives us 95% of what we watch anyway, @ £120 a year rather (get the netflix & disney free) than £720 before the price hike. So £1000 gross pay!

Samsung TVs menu/apps are pretty friendly.

All i’ve really lost in the ability to record. But no biggie due to the bbc/itv/4 catchup apps.

The Humax satellite box plays most on-demand channels, iPlayer, plus Netflix and the like

Previously I would have suggested that you could go down the app stick / box route and then use the TVPlayer app (this is both Android and Apple) but I believe they dropped ITV and C4 due to very low volumes watching but this app does exactly was you would want, stream live Freeview (and wider) content without the need for pesky aerials etc.

Get an aerial installed, £100-150. Or just use iPlayer/ITV hub etc.

I just signed up for Kapang and it seems to be pretty good. Can't seem to cast it from my iphone which is a shame but other than that it seems to do the job pretty well.
