Found a button on the LHS of the steering column, mirrors exactly the boot release button on the RHS - what’s this for? Mine is a 99 400.

It's for speeding at night, you can't be over the limit if you can't see the speedo.

The OP mentions the switch is on the LHS of the steering column, not the one on the underside of the dashboard that turns off the dashboard lights. If you meant that switch, in my '95 Chimaera many moons ago, it was for the heated seats.

My bold - suggests the OP does indeed mean the one under the dash

Correct..On LHS - no heated seats on mine, perhaps a dummy switch?

Apologies if I was was mistaken; when you referred to the switch ON the steering column, I wasn't sure that you may have been referring to the heated seats switch. The one on the left on the underside of the dash in the photo does indeed turn off the instrument lights.

Is that a button on the underside of the steering column shroud or the shadow of a third securing screw? scratchchin
