My dad has an 07 320D (MSport) and it has a set of 18" wheels that are forever getting damaged by the terrible road surfaces round here.

I know the square root of sod all about Beemers, but am assuming (hoping) that wheel bolt patterns are standardised amongst the basic spec models.

Any issues with slinging on a set of used poverty spec steelies/16" basic alloys?

No, no issues. Plenty cheap on eBay.

Thank you, that's what I'd hoped. Just didn't know if there was any difference in the offset etc with it being an M Sport with larger wheels.

Depends if it has larger brakes M sport models sometimes do

All E90/91 alloys are here and with their offsets and tyre specs too:

https://www.auto-treff.com/wcf/index.php?tagged/55...

It's a great website and will give you an idea of what can be fitted without any issues

As it's the 320D; all the alloys should fit as they won't have the bigger M Sport brakes etc

My advice would be to drop to 17s if you can and run normal tyres and bin the RFTs

Bin them asap. There's so little flex in the sidewalls that all that force from a hit with a pothole just gets transferred straight to the rim.

First thing I did with mine when I got it 12 yrs ago was to bin the run flats. The garage at the time said the wheels were out of true but not too bad, so a couple of years later I had them refurbed and made round again. Never had any trouble since.

In the meantime my wife had 2 1 series on RFTs (she wanted the reassurance) and had a number of bent alloys until she saw the light as well.

16s will fit a 320d. Re binning run flats it’s not quite black or white. Some prefer them others don’t.

According to RealOEM it has 330mm front discs. That seems to be larger than the average bear. I'll have a measure up next time I'm round there.

I'm pretty sure only the 3.0 cars had brakes that size but I could be wrong....

Just be sure you get wheels designed for the E9x cars as they changed the stud pattern or bolt size when they swapped to the F3x model. I also understand they went for slightly less low profile tyres on the later model to try and reduce the cracking alloys issues.

it's very black and white when it comes to the physics. A solid sidewall cannot absorb the blow of a pothole, it can only transfer the energy.

Regardless of the disc size.

That's a really useful site, thanks.

This seems to suggest that 16" wheels won't fit with performance brakes though:

16s fit a 320d. You don’t have performance brakes.

My E90 is a 330i so has the bigger front brakes but being an SE it has 17" wheels which fit fine, and even with run-flats I haven't had any damaged rims in the 3 years I've had it.

I did fit a set of 17" E89 Z4 wheels for the summer as I fancied a change but am selling them as I am considering selling the car. They have a slightly different offset so they sit 5mm further out in the arches but work fine with no rubbing. They may be another option.

Your car does not have M brakes, not even as an option.
