Red relay, black relay - red relay, black relay

Ok then guys - what the hell is the difference??

I know the red one is for the fuel pump and I know the black ones are for "everything else", but surely Porsche made them distinctly different colours for a very good reason, so why? They all have the same fittings and all have 12V written on then.

In other words if I was stranded and tried changing a red for a black (and visa versa), would it go pop? (I would expect it too so wouldn't try!!)

Just questions, I'm actually going to buy a spare to keep it "just in case", but I do love to know about things before they break.

Fuel pump relays do seem to have a habit of annoying their owner. If you're stuck you could try taking the relay out and hitting it (OK tapping, but very firmly so it gets the message), or shorting it but temporarily for safety reasons, or putting a permanent feed to the fuel pump. Once did the latter on a cossie using number plate illumination as a power source and feeding a wire through an existing orifice in the boot. That too must be temporary for safety reasons, which could explain the red colour as I'm sure alarm/immobiliser fitters are colour blind anyway

Red and black are the same as far as I know, colour difference is so that OPC Technicians will know where the fuel pump relay is after they lift the bonnet of a little piece of history.
