So, another new auction house type show started last night, this time about Vectis, the toy auctioneers. Of course I spent half the thing saying 'I used to have that', especially with the Star Wars stuff! The total that SW collection went for was amazing, too.

Not a bad show, early days yet to see how it/the staff etc gel on screen. But loved the nostalgia!

Some collectors are evidently insane.

I totally 'get' the 'I used to have that'/nostalgia element- very much- but the obsessive, completeist (sp?) side is something else. I was reading how different SW figures were made in different countries, and you'll get people who only collect 'Hong Kong' figures, stuff like that..!

I enjoyed it, but am a bit of a retro toy nerd. I'm tempted to go delving in my mums loft and get my childhood Star Wars toys out, but don't want to be tempted go down the route of collecting them.

Interesting programme.I wonder if the guy who bought a Jag F Type with what he made from selling models in one year is running it as a business or a hobby. The tax man might be interested

Fairly understandable if SW is your thing. There's not actually that many figures to collect (I seem to remember 90ish from the original 3 episodes, no idea on 'new' ones), so if you've completed the basic 90 odd you'll trying to refine it or get them all boxed and mint or whatever.

I don't know how he got £177 for the HW Deora.

No surf boards, very tatty, common colour. Sounds like somebody had a dose of auction fever.

I am no expert but I do have a few.

I watched the first programme and quite enjoyed it to see something different. But it was all about obsessive collecting which doesn't really do anything for me. Thousands of pounds for something because it's one toy in the packet for a different toy; I just don't care about that. Same way I don't care about numbers on cars or obsessions about originality. Best wishes to those that do though. smile

I worked with a guy who spent £2k on a fishing rod.

Carbon something or other.

Each to their own is my philosophy.

Depend. Had they been in his collection for years, lying around doing nothing until he suddenly decided to sell the lot? In which case no problem

Or had he bought them all comparatively recently with the express intention of reselling at a profit? Bit more of a grey area.

(A genuine question as I haven't seen the entire programme yet. Just starting to watch it on UKTV.)

I have precisely one toy for the purposes of sentiment:

I get it out and use it on occasion, but caps these days aren't what they used to be. They seem to only be about 1/2 the size of old caps.

That's because if you get 8 zillion packets of old caps and open each one and scrape the explosive out you can make a bomb and blow a car up. That's what we used to say anyway.
