CBTs 125 motorbike and new car license

Sorry this might be a stupid question - but my brother has ridden 125cc scooters on a provisional licence and CBT for the last decade. Every two years he has re-sat his CBT, to keep legal and displays an L plate.

He has just passed his test and now has his car license.

As his CBT is about to expire and as he hasn't sorted a car / sold his scooter, he is under the impression he will need to redo his CBT, as he has done previously. This will allow him to continue using his scooter.

I have read the guidance and I have interpreted it as his CBT won't now expire and will now continue for the length of his full license. Also he will no longer be required to display L plates. But the DVLA site, is a little confusing as it gives guidance for 50cc mopeds and not 125cc.

He can ride a 50cc (maybe up to 49) without a CBT. To ride up to a 125CC he’ll need to do his CBT again and every two years.

He’ll still need to display L-plates on the 125CC and not take a pillion.

So now he has his license his CBT expires for use on his 125 but would be valid of he uses a 50cc?

Does seem a little odd - as the CBT is the same course irrelevant of bike?

Apologies - I am a novice to this and trying to educate myself. So doing a bit more reading, I assume that it's down to him requiring an A1 license and not an AM license? But he now has B license which, doesn't help with his CBT for his A1 but would be beneficial if he wanted an AM??

Passing a car test gives him a licence to ride a moped without L plates.

Anything else requires a valid CBT and L plates. Up to 125cc can be ridden without supervision, if he wants to ride a larger capacity bike he will also need to be accompanied by an approved instructor. i.e. DAS or A2.

That’s not quite true. That only applies to motorcycles up to 49cc where the rider passed their driving test on or before 1997. If the rider passed their driving test afterwards then L plates must be displayed.

You passed your driving test on or after 1 February 2001
You’ll get a full moped licence if you either:

pass your car driving test and then complete a compulsory basic training (CBT) course
complete a CBT course and then pass your car driving test within two years
You can then ride a moped (up to 50cc) without L plates. You do not need to take the full moped test.

You can ride mopeds for as long as your car driving licence lasts.
