If I buy an iphone from somebody, I assume they need to get the unlock code for me?

Not sure why any legitimate seller wouldn't do a factory reset. Only reason would be they are ignorant or the device is stolen. I buy Apple devices at least 1 or 2 a month and over the last 10 years I've only had to request an unlock code and only once for a device that wasn't wiped.

The one that wasn't wiped was a girl that sold me an iMac but had simply dragged everything into the Trash, didn't dig to far but the content included all her work for a big fashion house and intimate photo and videos of her on holiday including photos of bank cards front and back and all her contacts and their addresses and phone numbers.

I wiped the thing within a minute, it would have been an identity fraudsters wet dream.
