Hi all, I wanted to ask if any of you have driven there and whether it's doable in a day? If not, any recommendations for a mid-route hotel? Thanks! Hus

Doing the museum in a day is easily achievable and as you would expect very well organised and welcoming. The restaurant coffee shop serves some great cake iirc.

We included it as part of a trip spanning Spa, The Ring (we stayed in an AirBnB close to the Ring before travelling further south), then on to Stuttgart for Porsche and also visited Mercedes just down the road.. The Merc museum is vast in comparison. Plenty of good hotels, restaurants and bars in Stuttgart and the surrounding more urban areas.

West of Stuttgart there are some fantastic back road driving routes - Baden Baden, Freudenstat areas if you have the time.

I always stay here, at the abacco hotel. a few KM from the museum. www.abaccohotels.com

I usually do the trip in one go so don’t stop enroute, but I guess any ibis hotel should be ok for a stop over.

I second the recommendation for the Mercedes museum if you have the time. Though I am primarily a Porsche fan the Mercedes museum is amazing with some wonderful cars like the 300SLR that won the Mille Miglia with Stirling Moss

Sorry, I meant is driving there from London achievable in a day... Also, I'll be hiring a Taycan while there and wondered if there is a loop I can take to test it out... Thank you

London to Stuttgart is doable in a day, but not if you want to do anything else other than go out for dinner.

Don’t forget to try the restaurant there. If you like steak.

I’ve done a round trip in a day by plane. First flight of the day out and a late ish flight back home. Gives about 1000-1700 in Stuttgart.

Definitely. Last time we went there was a discount for visiting both, and discount at the Porsche museum with POrsche Club membership.

We did them both in one day, which even as a petrol head was a bit much.

The Mercedes museum is brilliant, but not quite just down the road, but not far on the train.

My personal recommendation - stay at Val D'Ambleve in Stavelot which is a couple of miles from the "new" Spa and a few hundred yards away from the old circuit. It is a fantastic hotel, run by a lovely family. It's a great stop off and will leave you a 4 hour run to Stuttgart.

Lots to do in Stavelot - Spa museum, local history etc. Proper schlep to do Stuttgart in one hit.

Have a good recommendation for a hotel relatively local to Stuttgart too. Good hotels in Black Forest / Baden Baden area.

Fly out, on day one go to the Porsche museum, stay over, day two go to the Mercedes museum, fly home.

Maybe hire a Porsche whilst there.

The Porsche restaurant is good, you get lunch with factory collection of a new car.

The Porsche museum is great, but the Mercedes museum is 5-10x bigger and is probably the best car museum in the world IMHO.

It’s doable in a day but Stuttgart can have a lot of traffic at the usual rush hours. So the end part can be a real pain after a one hit trip.

Porsche will give you some road books if you are hiring off them. Just ask for them in advance.

We stopped at the German border overnight on the way down through Luxembourg, surprisingly fantastic roads away from the motorways. Then got to Porsche for the museum tour and a factory tour (it’s over the road but not sure they are running tours again yet). Went back by taxi for the restaurant, wine list as good as the steak (and got into the museum through the doors on the top floor but that way is rarely open after hours).

Next day we hired a 992 and went through the old test drive routes.

100% do the Mercedes museum. It’s massive.

Best recommendation is to Stay at this place…. https://www.v8hotel.de/en/ It’s the old zeppelin airfield converted to a hotel and lots of dealerships, Lamborghini, , Porsche, Ferrari, mclaren (in the hotel reception), and some great classics. It’s worth a day on its own. Note:I’m hoping this is what Bicester will become.

Depending on routes, The Classic Remise in Düsseldorf is a great place to stop on the way back…3/4 hours from Stuttgart…… amazing classics/super car dealers and storage within the historical Steam Trains storage/turntable facilities. https://remise.de/duesseldorf cafe in the centre is the best motorway services option on the way back to the shuttle!

Forgot to add, the restaurant on the top, Christophorus also has an excellent cigar bar overlooking the Porsche roundabout/factory etc….hence why we went back by taxi.

I want to thank you all for your suggestions. What a helpful bunch!!! In summary: I'm going to make it in a single day, stay at the Abacco, collect my hire Taycan at 9am following morning, back for a tour of the museum, steak, hotel, Benz museum the next day, then a tiny bit of Stuttgart itself! Home the next day.
