Hire Car Parking Penalty - Tenerife

Hi All,

Must have possibly accidentally parked in a bus layby up near Mt. Tide in Tenerife,
10th December 2021.

Taking a few photos etc.

€200 fine, but €100 if paid within 15 days of receiving letter, came Thursday 31 March 2022.

Do I pay, or do I ignore it. ?

It was just 2 days hire, and paid for by cash

You paid in cash for the hire but Did the hire car co take your credit card details as well? They normally do. If so I`m sure they will charge the fine to your card.

No debit card details, and no credit card details.

I suppose you could ignore it as they probably can’t be arsed chasing the debt.

However, there is a chance that you may struggle to hire a car in future not just in Tenerife but also the wider Canary Islands or even mainland Spain.

Are you sure it’s legitimate?

If you’re sure it is, I’d pay it. You’ve said that you committed the offence and it could cause you issues hiring in the future.

I should add.
There was no windscreen sticker, or plastic envelope on the car.
I actually think it is a scam to be honest.

Thursday just gone, was the first I had heard about it.
3 months elapsed.

Had a parking ticket in Corfu some years ago, advised to pay it as Iwanted to go back ,and passport details had been taken by hire company,didn’t want to be the fool who gets taken in the back room at the airport and explaining why I have avoided paying the fine

I wouldn't hesitate, file in the bin.

Not that I've ever done it, but you could have a play with TESTRA, 'an electronic board that allows you to consult the notifications for Traffic sanctions that could not be carried out at the home of the interested party due to the latter being absent'.

Considering the standard of 'parking' (OK, general car abandonment) on Corfu and other Greek islands, that is quite an impressive achievement. Even I've not managed it yet anywhere in Greece.

Does anyone really think that customs/police/interpol will nab you on entry for a parking ticket?

Other than Switzerland (and perhaps UK) I doubt anywhere takes motoring infractions so seriously...

I rented a car in Zante and didn't need to give a credit card deposit.
