Hi All,

Some context needed here.

I am fortunate to run my own business, and as a (relatively) tax free perk I currently have an iPace which is due to go back in early May after 36,000 miles with only 4 Jaguar/AA visits rescue visits for various problems including brake failure.....

I placed an order for an i4 M50 back in November, in my spec (green over tan... original idea) but STILL have no build slot, with the hints being that it could be Q4 this year, if this year.

To extend my iPace more than doubles the cost of the lease to £1,700 per month (+VAT) for another 6 months, but they will not extend further than that.

I stumbled across a BMW IX e40 M Sport in stock last week that could be delivered next week. It's pretty well equipped (not all would be my choice) and is 50% more expensive than the i4, but that's not necessarily an issue.

Our "use case" is 2 small terrier dogs who tend to sit on the back seat (seat covers thank god), a 3 year old toddler and 3-4 holidays to Devon (which has destination charging), from London, per year. I probably do days in excess of 250 miles once or twice per month to Nottingham or Sheffield. We live in the Surrey Hills, but often walk the dogs at the top of a hill to which there is a pretty rough off road track. My work is construction based, so there is a lot of parking on site, in fields etc.

We also have a discovery sport hybrid which my wife uses as a daily.

What would you be doing? Accepting the expensive iPace for an unknown point of time to get the i4 M50, or taking the IX with the smaller battery that could be with you next week?

Does anyone have an iX e40 who can settle me on the real life range? I read of people managing to get 225 miles out of an iPace, but I could count the number of times I've managed more than 200 on one hand!

Could you jump on a rental from Onto to cover you while you wait for the i4?

The iX has a smaller battery than the iPace and will be less efficient, so expect less range than you get at the moment.

You say that, but having looked at a few video reviews it seems to consume 29.5 kw/100km vs my jaguar which is generally 38-40kwh/100km - Unsure how representative of "normal" my consumption currently is?

Potentially - They're not taking on new business customers, but I guess I could do it personally and claim back at worst.

Hadn't heard of that, so appreciate the heads up

The problem is getting hold of one.... Unless you have a secret source!?

Are you sure the i4 is definitely in stock? I work for a BMW retailer and we can’t get hold of the i4 for love nor money

The iX forums have some posts from UK owners with IX cars (one is a 50, another unknown spec) and are sharing real world consumption of 2.4-2.5 miles/kwh from recent months

So given the iX e40 has a usable capacity of 71.0 kwh, that's a real world range at the moment of 170 miles (2.4 miles/kwh), assuming you charge to 100% and drive down to 0% before recharging, doesn't sound very impressive to me

The i4 is the car that isn’t available until (who knows… next year) though I’ve been told I could have the IX in 2 weeks

That's what happens when you fit a 20" shod, 2400KG SUV with a 71kW battery in an attempt to keep prices low. Should do slightly better numbers than that though as the 50 is considerably heavier and more powerful but can't expect miracles.

What is the scenario for useable range? Driving at 70-80mph or faster? The numbers you are mentioning for the I-Pace is what I get around 90mph in cold weather and headwind.

The reason I’m asking is if you expect to drive the iX hard then it will use similar amounts of electrons as the I-Pace and with a smaller battery then you will get less range obviously.

I went and looked at an iX and an iX3 last weekend as a potential work commute replacement for my i3 REx.

The interior of the iX is lovely but my god it's a pig outside! iX3 looks very traditional but perhaps too boring.

What really put me off the iX most though was the quoted efficiency of 2.4-2.6 miles per kwh and the relatively (for an electric car) slow 6.6 to 60 for the 40 version. As others have said I reckon it'll struggle to achieve 200 if driven with any spirit and/or aircon/heating on! iX3 fared a little better on the quoted efficiency of 2.9 mi/kwh.

As someone else has suggested the i3 is also a good shout, mine is currently averaging 4.5mi/kwh whilst averaging about 62mph on my 55 mile commute, albeit with heating off as it takes about 10% range off! There's always the tesla Model Y (runs for cover!)

Generally between 70-80mph (if on motorway), but generally B roads and town driving. My car is pretty early (Sept 2019) and has always been the same though... so might be a bad one. The absolute max it has ever shown whilst fully charged is a 240 mile range.

In an ICE scenario I'm generally quite an efficient driver.

There's a YouTube review of the iX where the chap drives at motorway speeds in cold temperatures and gets a range of 158 miles.

The battery in the 40 is too small for an EV of that size. 70kW is less capacity than the significantly smaller and lighter Model 3 or Polestar 2 LR and is 35kW less useable than you get in the ix50. That's literally an entire i3 battery smaller.

160 miles sounds about right for the iX 40 as a worst case motorway speed kind of range. I think it's a very fine EV though so if it was me and that range was acceptable day to day (which it probably is in fairness) then I would go for it.

Don't worry, my experience of the iPace was the same as yours. Not very efficient.
