Just a quick one.

I’m looking to buy a 991 911, probably around 2016 onwards.

I’ve seen a couple at non Porsche dealers being advertised with x-months of OPC warranty still available. I’m sure from reading on here that it wasn’t the case that the warranty stayed in place if I bought from a non Porsche dealer.

I was going to ring My local OPC tomorrow but thought I would ask on here first.

Thanks.

You are basically right.

But cars on sale or return, being sold “on behalf of their owner” may be capable of a successful work around.

A pal just bought a lovely car from a highly respected indie on that basis and had no issues at all.

The only anecdotal horror story I have heard was a previous owner cashing in the balance of the warranty leaving the selling garage high and dry…

I sold our 981CS on SOR with 10 months remaining. Transferred to new owner.

The problem you've got is that to ensure the warranty is transferred, the transaction needs to be with the current owner, not the trader. The problem with that, is that you then don't have your statutory rights when buying from the trade.

If you do go ahead, be aware of that. If you pay the money to the trader and get an invoice from same, that breaches terms of the warranty. If you pay the owner, then it's a private sale with no comeback.

If you do the latter and consider it a private sale with a valuation to reflect that, then makes sense. If you're paying a trade premium but not getting your statutory rights, less good. If the trader is completely up front about all that, then that would be reassuring. Less so if they fudge the details. Maybe let them tell you how they think / claim it works and go from there?
