2022 Mustang Convertible or GR86?

Hi folks,

I have decide quickly, maybe you can help?

I thinking of buying either a 2022 Mustang California Special or a Toyota GR86. I'm unsure which way to go... I know they're both very different cars with different price points.

I love the sound of the V8 but the bang for the buck of the '86 is amazing.

And which would hold value best?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I suppose the GR would be faster on track and be a more satisfying B road blaster, but a V8 convertible would swing it for me.

Do you want a convertible I guess? If yes. Then the GR86 can never offer that.

Each has a distinctive, but different, appeal.

I made a similar choice in 2016 between the then current versions, and for me it came down to what felt special by comparison with what I had had before; I then owned a Mazda RX8 and by comparison the Toyota did not feel special; the Mustang however did. If I had never had the RX8 I think the Toyota would have been my choice but I have never regretted buying the Mustang, and still own it now.

These are not logical choices, it's what grabs you. If you are unsure, perhaps neither have grabbed you and another car altogether might be better?

Well they certainly did at first, due to long waits for new ones. I think it is Croyde on here who owned one for a year and got purchase price back in full- but that was then! And of course in 2016 you got a manual V8 Coupe for £36k, so as the prices of new ones headed past £45k that helped keep older ones values up.

I love mine. And although I understand the comment about the Toyota being a better B Road blaster, you can have plenty of fun on B roads in a Mustang, slow into corners, briskly out with a nice burble to listen to, all within the speed limit. I used to drive much faster on B roads in the old RX8, no more fun, much more risk of being caught, or having an accident.

Neither are exactly mainstream though so may not lose as much as a normal car. But they will still cost you plenty money in depreciation.

If I had to make a choice I’d say the GR86. Because there are likely to be more people looking to buy it off you than a convertible Mustang at any one time.

Also a V8 might be less easy to shift if fuel prices stay high.

But ultimately, if you want to save money, don’t buy a new car.

Convertible Mustang surely suggests the other option should be an MX5?

The obvious GR86 alternative has to be a Mustang Coupe - I'd take a manual V8 Mustang GT every time!

If you haven’t already you need to drive the mustang. I love the coupe but the conversion to soft top has spoiled the car dynamically, reducing it to a fun relaxed cruiser only. If that’s what you want then it will be great, but then you’re looking at the very dynamic other car, hence my comment for caution.

You need to test drive both because as soon as you do you'll know which one you want to buy.

I’ve driven a Mustang GT and loved it, they felt a lot more special than the GT86 and I guess the same will be true of the GR86 - I’m not really keen on the looks of the GR but that’s a subjective thing. Mustang all the way for me even if it’s convertible

Not sure what the waiting list is on the GR86 and/or whether that has any bearing on your decision however I ordered my Mustang GT Convertible last July and i'm still waiting! New orders are now quoting Jan 2023 although if my order is anything to go by i'd take that with a pinch of salt!

First deliveries of the GR86 are due in July and they haven't opened the order books yet - this is expected on Monday.
