So, we're looking at cutting our XC40 PHEV's lease halfway and 'trading up' into an XC90 PHEV. We'd probably be buying a 2017-18 car due to budget, and I've never bought a used PHEV before (the XC40 is our second lease hybrid).

What's worth looking for when we're buying? Is there any method to test the battery? What should I expect a warranty to cover, if anything?

Thanks in advance!

I believe at that year quite a few have had the electric motor assembly at the rear (ERAD) fail. Can start with noises, hesitation etc. sometimes repairable, sometimes needs a complete unit.

Volvo will apparently cover it until year 4 and 50% of it till year 5.

There was a cracking 3yr lease deal on the T8 about a year ago and I went to test drive one, I honestly couldn't have been much more disappointed with the car, it felt like it rolled a hell of a lot in the corners compared to the competition and I just found it uninspiring, despite the power that was available. I also found it difficult to stomach the money for the infotainment system but if you're already in an XC40 then I guess that's a non-issue for you.

If you've already driven one and like it then good luck with your hunt and I hope you find a good one.

We’ve just ordered a new MY23 with the larger battery, updated Android based entertainment etc so I’m hoping this is no longer the case? Any ideas if this was limited to particular years?

I believe up to 2018 as the fix is an updated bearing so I assume it’s built into the newer ones.

Thanks all. This definitely isn't going to be a car to enjoy driving!

It’s for wafting around in, not hammering through bends. It’s a great wafter.
