Looking at the these at the mo 2013 ish various mileages.

Seems private sellers are asking similar to trade and everything on auto trader 5 k more than Wbac and motorway prices.

Won’t be pulling trigger on that basis- is this typical numbers?

I don’t think that sort of year is optimum for wbac - not their target market

My 2013 90k c class was £7000 on wbac , confident I could get £10000 privately compared to what else is out there.

I would prefer to use those services but too big a difference on cars of that age / mileage

Completely normal.

Car buying sites are not selling you a car, they're offering a price to take it off your hands with no hassle. That doesn't represent a cars value if your looking to buy. I could offer someone £1 for their Ferrari, doesn't mean its worth that.

Your best guide is looking at what people are asking and whether or not they're selling.

All fair points.

Looking at 3.0 or Btdi various mileages 2012/13 starting about 12.5k up to 17k. Not that many about which I guess obv supports values.

In no urgency so will hold for now unless something comes my way.

Have no experience here hence the ask, just was not expecting to see that much of a differential I suppose.

make sure you get the the bi-tdi with better gearbox.

check all the buying sites, that'll give you a better sense. I'd go to a dealer if it was within £2k of a used price.

I raised this point a few months back on here when dealers kept telling people to use WBAC to see their trade in. Eventually people would use WBAC to see what the car the dealer was selling was worth.

Brave buyer to purchase a car that they know is worth £2K less the moment they hand over their money. Especially with a ridiculously inflated market.

Wbac offered 1950 for my 3.0 a6 allroad s line interior and pretty much every option. I got 4300 for it privately.
Dont put too much weight on wbacs opinion. Its a rigged game, but nobody forces you to play, I did have to wade through window lickers for a couple of weeks and I was probably unnecessarily abrasive to a few people by the end of it but it was worth the effort.
Still miss that car, they do everything to a very high standard. Get a stage 2 map and it will be impossible to wipe the grin off your face. New owner has sent me pics, he is racking up the miles back and forward to eastern europe bit he is maintaing it very well, he is delighted with it.

I don’t understand this point, WBAC and trade in prices have always been ‘trade’ prices and not retail. Since the dawn of time people have bought cars that dealers have put ~£2k margin across cars. It’s a fact of life if you buy from dealers and sell at dealers.

You do realise WBAC are buying cars to make a nice tidy profit on them?

Therefore they're not a guide to what a car is worth, they're a guide to what they'll pay should you decide you can't be arsed to sell your car privately.

If you're looking at a certain car & they're all around the same price point then that's what they're worth.

Yes of course I get all that, as with anything it’s worth what someone is willing to pay.

I don’t know why, but I guess I had expected the differential to be max 2k for the hassle of a private sale not 4/5k, more for dealer obvs. Hence my question ‘is this typical numbers’. (Guidance seems to be ‘yes’)

I’ll keep an eye on market for now and when my daily tow car dies it will force my hand prob for a Bitdi.

Cheers All

I think you are right in saying that private sellers shouldn’t be asking as much as dealers because they can’t possibly offer the same kind of service or protection. If a dealer is asking 4K above trade price then a private sale should be somewhere in between depending on the car. A lot of private sellers are dreamers and have been caught up in the hype that their car is now worth way more than they paid for it 5 years ago. Go and see the car you like and make a fair offer, the rest is up to them.

2 years ago I sold a 3 series for £5700. The guy spent 2 hours kicking the tyres and going over every tiny detail of what was an immaculate car before beating me down on price. At the time WBAC we’re offering £4600 so I was fine with the price. The other week I noticed on AT that he’s selling it again, this time for £8300. Dream on, as far as I know it’s still there.

Edit. It is in fact still listed at the same price. There’s an identical car with 10k less miles for sale on a dealer forecourt for the exact same money. It’s crazy.

It's in the publics interest for trade and retail price to be as similar as possible.

Would you sell your house using an estate agent charging 5% or another charging 1%. Dealers is the same thing.
