Just noticed for the first time that the muslim slur kaffir has been dropped from lime leaves in the supermarket and replaced with makrut.
Always was surprised to see the word in print, though I did find it amusing.
First noticed 'Makrut Limes' in a Guardian recipe (where else) and thought WTF for about a nanosecond before thinking 'I bet that's Guardianspeak for "Kaffir Limes"'. Checked on google to confirm.Always was surprised to see the word in print, though I did find it amusing.

One "f"... Kafir Kaffir is an apartheid name for black Africans.
It's a translation from a foreign language with an entirely different alphabet so it is natural that variations occur.
Same as I might say parotta, and you paratha; we're still eating the same bread.

Anyone know what kafir limes are called in their native area ? - I wonder if it is one of those cases where a word has developed in two different regions with different meanings.

I believe the word (as known in the west) comes from Berber or one of the other North African languages, almost certainly from one of the salve trading countries on the north/north west coast. Thing is it actually means infidel.
