Just noticed for the first time that the muslim slur kaffir has been dropped from lime leaves in the supermarket and replaced with makrut.
Always was surprised to see the word in print, though I did find it amusing.

First noticed 'Makrut Limes' in a Guardian recipe (where else) and thought WTF for about a nanosecond before thinking 'I bet that's Guardianspeak for "Kaffir Limes"'. Checked on google to confirm.

Depends where you're from.
It's a translation from a foreign language with an entirely different alphabet so it is natural that variations occur.
Same as I might say parotta, and you paratha; we're still eating the same bread. smile

Its shameful that such blatant racist terms still exist on our supermarket shelves , I have written to Jacobs many times to get them to change the name on their "Savoury biscuits" , with no reply

I believe the word (as known in the west) comes from Berber or one of the other North African languages, almost certainly from one of the salve trading countries on the north/north west coast. Thing is it actually means infidel.

Anyone know what kafir limes are called in their native area ? - I wonder if it is one of those cases where a word has developed in two different regions with different meanings.

I wonder when OBE and MBE will be dropped in favour of an award with a name which doesn't include 'the Empire'.

Surprising oversight in these enlightened times!
