Practical Mercedes CLS replacement

So today was the final nail in the realisation coffin that I knew was coming. I love my 2009 CLS, it's comfortable, quiet, pulls like a steam train and looks great.
I'm a single bloke, no kids so never had the need for much practicality.
However, I have a £5k emtb, wanted to get a towbar mounted bike rack as its not really practical to be lumping it on the roof like I currently am as it's too heavy (23.5kg) but can't as it's not registered to tow so can't do that.
Then theres the fact it has no ski chute or split folding rear seats, not something I'd considered a car didn't come with when buy. So anytime I need to buy furniture or lengths of wood like today, it's in the passenger footwell and hanging out the rear drivers side window.
I do roughly 15-20k a year and it's not uncommon to be commuting 2-3 hrs, so I need something that's comfortable.
It needs to be diesel and I don't mind something with a bigger engine as the Merc is 3.0 V6.
It needs to be able to have a towbar fitted and big enough that I can put flat pack furniture or 2.4m lengths of 2x4 down the middle.
Budget.... £5k, don't mind anything above 100k miles as the Merc was 108k when I bought it. If I could stay 09 plate of newer ideal of not, choice of car matter more.

Now I'd say an E Class but the Coupe because the rear seats are split folding unlike the saloon.
