Hi - does anyone know if these are in the shops now?

They should be, but google is inconclusive and with all of the upheaval we've got at the moment I wouldn't be surprised if they're not available.

I need to decide if I need to take a detour to Borough Mkt tomorrow, or if I can depend on Waitrose (or any other supermarket) on Friday or Saturday.

TIA

Yes, Sainsburys. Picked some up the other day.

eta: if you have access to borough market I'd be shopping there, Sains was 2.95 for a small bag (2 portions) and I would expect you would get better from borough.

Ive always found borough to be outrageously overpriced even for the basics?

I think the problem is two fold, first market prices are by kilo (or tonne!!) and therefore the perception by retail consumers is "expensive", i.e. my local fish merchant is £27 a kilo for monkfish and this is the price he puts on the blackboard outside his retail shop. What he doesn't say is £3.50 for a monkfish steak.

Then add in that some wholesalers are not set up to or interested in supplying retail and with staff shortages, increased costs etc they would rather spend 2 minutes on the phone selling 3t of produce rather than 5 minutes to flog 300g.

Irrespective of cost I would recommend buying as near to source as possible to ensure quality.

Just waiting for (God/HRH/Lord) Koffman to anoint his next vegetable protege!

Borough Market has much in its favour, but cheap it is not.

Local grocers and fruit/veg markets in outlying and unfashionable suburbs are often the best value IME. As well as being quite good fun to visit.

Penge, Woolwich, Surrey Street in Croydon, Nunhead. These are some of the places that are near(ish) to me that I go marketing in. Zero cred but often great quality and VFM.

Having said all that I scored my first Jerseys in Morrison's the other day;)

Still think they are the best spud of the year but .......... as a child I remember them as these small muddy things, now they are positively massive in comparrison and always scrubbed clean. IMHO this has lessened their flavour.

Agree with last part about lessened flavour

Personally think Cornish New potatoes are better than the over exalted JR!

Typical, local Asda haven't got any.... but they did have plan de dieu down from £8 to £6 then 25% off, £4.50 a bottle. Rude not to.

Also... san miguel, 18x330ml bottles... 3 cases for £21.

Not a completely wasted trip.

Jerseys' have been dire for many years in comparison to the "good ol days". So I looked into this about 5 years ago and it seems the commercial growers (those that supply us mere mortals) stopped using local seaweed as fertiliser due to the expense (It's a myth that the EU banned it) and also 'force' grow them under polythene. I can't confirm any of this of course but I know they ain't the same!

My home grown Charlottes are by far a better spud and are the only variety I plant thumbup

JR's aren't the same as they used to be, and nor are Gardeners Delight tomatoes that every greenhouse owner grows.

I have easy access to seaweed and Suttons seeds headquarters are in walking distance. How easy is it to grow these things?

Fairly easy if you can get international kidney seed potatoes
