Looking forward to it too, its a strange story, and can't believe its 20 years ago.

Interesting case, pretty sure that’s a Geordie accent the actor is using rather than a Hartlepool one though!

Exit pedant mode….

The further you get into Hartlepool the more it blurs into the Co. Durham accent from next door. Still a way off full Geordie but there's similar harsh sounds and a slight singsong to a lot of Co. Durham accents. A lot of the local area has former pit villages which are still relatively isolated...

I’ve googled that because was a bit shocked - he turned up in 2007. Still 15 years ago! MiL is recording this for me to watch as thought it looked like it would be interesting.

Strangely enough other half has just bought and collected a canoe tonight… scratchchin

Indeed. I’m from sunderland for my sins, my daughter in law is from Hartlepool, the accent is nothing like the newcastle based geordie accent the actor is using, nor is the sunderland accent which is much closer to Newcastle than Hartlepool.

I suppose for the rest of the country anything north of Hull is “geordie land”…….

I'm a Geordie and have lived in Leeds for 20 years.
It boils my piss when an obvious Macum or Smoggie is called a Geordie down here, the accent is so different.
It's the same for every local accent in the country though.
I can almost tell which village people in the North East come from!

Whatever the accuracy of the accent is I'm looking forward to seeing Eddie Marsan in the role. He's done some Mike Leigh stuff which is normally a sign of a good actor.

Yes, it is a remake. The BBC did one previously called "Canoe Man" back in 2010

He is very good. He played the part of Dr Guttman (sp?) in a drama about the Jewish doctor who set up the Stoke Mandeville spinal injuries unit. He was also in The Limehouse Golem, although in a small part, and he was convincing in that role.

Probably give this a watch too, as it seems to just be a single-parter of just an hour..

I used to work with one of Darwin's sons and daughters-in-law.

I wish people would reflect on the fact that this isn't some soap opera or ancient history. This is a story about a family who have experienced a great deal of pain and sorrow. People know the story; it really doesn't need laying bare all over again 🙄

Don't watch his new horror Choose or Die that's just popped up on Netflix then, it's crap and he's not that good in it either.
