I am sure this has been done to death, but help me out please as I am not sure what options are available in the current marketplace.

I am currently in the process of a full body off refurb and my attention has now turned to the engine as it is out of the car. I bought the car as a non runner and have not driven it, it has been off the road since 2013.

I took off the inlet manifold and valley gasket to have a look at the camshaft and have established that at least two lobes are quite worn, so it needs replacing along with the followers.

It is a standard 4 litre serp engine. In future I might go aftermarket ecu but not to start with. I don’t mind a cam that gives slightly lumpy idle if it gives a bit more punch.

So what would people recommend please?

I went with a V8 Developments MC1 and it was a very nice strong cam especially in the mid range and top end.
They do a hotter version called the Stealth everyone raves about but I believe this one requires valve reliefs in the pistons which a standard 400 won’t have.
Powers performance are another one to consider, their 885 gets very good feedback too.

Yep, I also went for the V8D MC1. Car pulls strongly but also idles nicely.

I put MC1 in a Griffith and couldn't tell any difference tbh. I put a PIPER 285 in a 450 and noticed a distinct difference in upper mid range. The idle wasn't as lumpy as some would have you believe either, a 'little' maybe but not bad. Just my honest opinion from my own experience. driving

An MC1 is a mild cam with great manners ideal for smaller engines .. the stealth is excellent for more power .. I've regulalry seen 340/350hp from stealth cammed engines and they drive nicely too

Darren (Rob) Robertson is Mr Camshaft so give him a bell and I'm sure he will sort you out, including one-off grinds for specific applications.

Be interested to hear what they said.
I know a lot of Rover guys recommend crower camshafts too but they are not that common in the UK.

yes

I had one of these fitted in my 400 for about 1k miles before i decided to do a complete engine rebuild and went down a different camshaft route. I regretted not putting the 885 back in, it felt like it transformed the car and made it a complete joy to rev out.

I no longer have the Chim but still have the 885 camshaft in a box. Is there much of a market for a sub 1k miles camshaft or should i turn it into an ornament for the lounge?! scratchchin
