It does look like a very good upgrade for pre-Ryzen 5000 systems (for gamers) and is definitely a way to extend the life of an AM4 based gaming box out for a few years. AMDs decision to stick with the same basic CPU socket from the original Zen up to Zen3 is paying dividends for users and themselves.
A bit of a shame that only the 5800 got the '3D Vcache' treatment though, and it took such a long time to get released after being teased. As I took the plunge for a 5900X in the middle of last year though, I feel vindicated about my purchase (was hemming and hawing at the time about the possibility of a 5900X3D by the end of 2021 as AMD previewed the tech on a 5900).

Damn good price at the moment too.
Yeah £360 from Scan in todays deals. The 3D does look like a great processor but weighing up all the pros and cons I use Lightroom and Prem a fair bit I think the 5900 was the most balanced choice for me.When I built this system a few years ago to replace my old 2500k I did budget for a 3900 but you just couldn't get hold of them.
Just flashed my BIOS I've probably done 60 in the past month but it's always nerve wracking when its yours !
I bought a 5600X recently for my lounge gaming machine and was very impressed with overclock, undervolt, and price.
Tempted to change my 3950X for a 5950X given the benefits on the curve optimiser for more stable undervolting!
These 3D processors must be very nice… though I kinda think a 5600X is fine for games, and if it’s not or you’re doing productivity, the 5950X isn’t that much more…

5950X is around 145 quid more than 5900x for me 5900X is the sweet spot as regards gaming and productivityTempted to change my 3950X for a 5950X given the benefits on the curve optimiser for more stable undervolting!

Tuned 5800X3D undervolted with the same performance.
"lowest stable voltage that he reached was at 0.844V. At this limit, the CPU consumed a maximum power of 57W in Cinebench & ran at an all-core frequency of 4.4 GHz. The CPU also operated at just 40-41C"
