Anecdotally, are there more single males or females?

Based on what I have seen, there are far more single/ divorced women in my circles (friends, family and acquaintances). I’m not sure if they are all that bothered about it as they are pretty happy with their dogs as far as I can tell. Most of my mates are married and are fully subscribed to ball & chain.

No, but not everyone with few friends has that degree of confidence. Or motivation.So based on the responses to far:

- Men want to avoid financial ruin (includes those who have dodged a bullet and those who want to minimise further loss)
I'm still thinking that the number of single women outnumber single men, but I don't know if this includes unemployed men. I mean do unemployed women date/ marry unemployed men? I thought women only trade up or hang out with the ladies plus their dogs?

At least, I think that's right.
Factually, ONS data shows that there are marginal differences due to the difference in life expectancy. So if you look at just the dark blue bars in the graph below, you can see the shape they make isn’t quite symmetrical (2017 data). This is more significant after about 60 (when you have look at the green bars for ‘widowed’ too).
So if it seems there is more difference at an earlier age, then that must be down to a social effect as others have noted.

I’m in Meetup.
Any Meetup group that concentrates on the social side will be a membership of 2:1 female to male. With attendance on events usually 60:40. I have been on events, a decent meal with 14 there and just 3 are men. Another meal had 13 women and 1 man (not me). They whinged like hell at this as he was in his late 70’s!
Try holding an event off group, say a curry night for the lads, and all sorts of accusations let fly. However, a woman only “ladies who lunch” is considered de-rigueur and should be applauded.
Forthcoming events for me with current attendance.
Meal - 3 men - 2 women
Drinks night – 21 women – 14 men
Walk – 16 women - 7 men
Pub quiz – 8 women – 3 men
Walk - 18 women – 12 men
Its not unheard of for the attendance ratio to inverse completely in the 24 hours prior to the event, as women drop out of the event and are replaced by men, who, no doubt put their name down as there were loads of women attending.
So, it does appear to me that there are loads more single women socialising in my age group (50-60) than men.
Where are all the men? I don’t know, I think they just immerse themselves in their hobbies. I know a few who are into continental motorcycle touring, and they live for it.
