Good afternoon people. As a certain person stated on the radio ..." i am a first time caller so be gentle".

I am looking to purchase a weekend car ( toy she shouts!!)and my budget is £12-14K
Simple has to be a 911 ....not worried about top end speed....get up and go yes....Annual 5000 miles on classic insurance policy.
What model/ year this 44 year old.can this mid life crisis sufferer use as a starting point, plus any recommended sevice centers close to Maidstone Kent.

Thanks in advance for your help.

911 3.2 or a 964, Parr are in Crawley for servicing but I'm sure there must be something nearer to you.

Yep, I'd agree - 3.2 Carrera or the 964 (which ran from 1989 to 1993).

With your budget, I'd reckon you'd get a pretty decent example but remember to get it properly checked before buying anything.

Sorry - I can't help about the service places.

Thanks for the advice guys.....I have driven one these and understand you buy on condition/ history rather than milage.Dont suppose a yearly maintenance budget could be offered based on the 5000 miles per annum. Sorry i know its a bit ....finger in the air time ... but any pointers would be helpful.

Try La Rose / Paul Devyea, they are in Kent and last time I looked they sold and serviced these cars.

For a 964 in good condition, a budget of £1500 pa should be enough for servicing unless you're unlucky. Bear in mind that you may spend £500 two years running and then £3500 the next.

Had my 964 (toy) for four months now and the first service was approx £400 from JZ Machtech, I intend to run up to 7k per year and problems aside the next visit has been booked for April next year.

I had it checked thoroughly before buying and tbh didnt need the service untill later in the year but after a full weekend at Lemans decided that a service was kind.

For your budget, which was similar to mine you will find a good example but it may take time, it took me 6 months to find mine.

Best of luck

Henry has a nice SC which would leave you with a bit of spare cash. The SC has an more old fashioned feel to it than a Carrera and a 964 is more modern too. I'd try both and see what you like

Personally i have to say, as a first 911, i would have only one recommendation in your price range.

A right hand drive 3.2 Carrera coupe - 87/88/89 model (G50 gearbox).

Maintenance on a clean 3.2 is likely to be much less expensive than an equivalent 964, not least because the 3.2 is so simple.

I would expect depreciation to be similar, though slightly better on the 3.2 perhaps.

For the money you are talking about, you can buy an excellent RHD 3.2 or a pretty good LHD 964.

The driving experience is undoubtedly more modern in a 964, but there's something amazingly charming about the last of the "proper" 911's.

Just my two penneth, of course.

Something like this:

1987 911 Carrera Coupe Sport 3.2, RHD, G50 gearbox, black with black leather interior, full Porsche service history with main dealers and more recently Porsche independents, 103k miles, serviced at 101,900 miles, 12 months MOT, electric seats, sunroof, windows and mirrors, new clutch, 16" Fuchs, no rust anywhere, good ones like this are very rare, HPI clear. www.villa-nerja.com/porsche911.htm

Definitely agree with Verysideways - see my profile to look at my beautiful 3.2. A real, raw car - no driver aids just you and the car and the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

And the bonus is that they are bomb-proof and really quite cheap to keep and if you buy well you'll lose nothing in depreciation.

Hi There -

I recently purchased a 964 for you sorta cash -

if you want the full monty on the 964/3.2 debate check this thread out

FWIW - I ended up buying Scottsters 964 - It had had much of the expensive big jobs done recently and drives very well.

I think (from research rather than experience, i hasten to add...) that 964s will cost more in terms of regular maintainance but if the 'problems' have been sorted, running costs should only be marginally higher than a 3.2 and. for the money. you get a more modern drive.

just my twopenneth....

I'm with VS, my 3.2 was a good car save for the gearbox, which was a bit of a pig when cold. Post '86 models had the G50 box, which wasn't a paragon, but better than the 915. Buy on condition, don't get too hung-up on mileage or colour. (God I'm beginning to sound like Henry F, shoot me !! )

Thanks for all the advice people, its down to doing the hard leg work now and trying to source "the one".

Couple of other pointers that would be helpful....
Pre inspection checks...Anyone come to mind in the Kent area??? and Insurance companies.

Just to blow my cover somewhat...i have just sold my 1980 mini clubman Gt.....that was insured by hpi fully comp, 5000 miles pa ...£175 quid.....and before you all start sniggering at Leylands finest it was 176Bhp and powered by a honda1600 v - tec.....176 horses at the wheel...very very fast ....but alas the novelty wore off.

Thats where the porkers come in....no need to shout about things ...let the car do the talking piece of kit...plus have fancied one since i was a lad....didnt Steve Mcqueen arrive at The race circiut in a 911 in the film Le Mans ???

Anyhow took the mini round Le Mans full circiut at the first classic meet 2 yrs ago....so hope to do the same with a 911 next year....Anyone going from here?
