Bank card machine epayments system

I use Ingenico card machines st work which I have currently got connected to an analogue line and they dial out to something called “Transpac” (this is in France) to confirm cards and verify payments in the evening.
The system has started to get flaky, I think, because they are phasing out the analogue line service and only 1 call in 2 goes through.
I have talked to a few service providers to change to an internet version of the above. How does this work in the U.K. and how much does it cost, 1 off payment or monthly?
I only ask because often they try to rip you off over here for something you can often easily do yourself.
I’m quite handy with tech, I’d this doable?
