Turbo issue - worth trying turbo cleaner?
Discussion
Wife’s Freelander 2 suddenly lost power the other day, lots of black smoke and a strange noise under the bonnet. Also did it a week before but not as bad and without smoke which cured itself. Whatever happened the other day appears to be permanent now.
No fault codes found on my reader but it was a £15 cheapo one. I checked the intercooler and hoses and they seem ok. Turbo solenoid actuator seems to be moving ok when I crawled underneath. Wondering if it could be sticking vanes? Is it worth trying one of those turbo cleaners? Either the sort you add to the diesel or squirt into the intake?
Anyone used one to cure similar symptoms?

I considered one for my EGR issues and after quite a bit of research decided that even at about £7 its just a waste of money, even though I'm faced with an Engine Out scenario to sort the EGR at a later date.
If there's any doubt about the Turbo itself (my issue is with the EGR), proceed with caution, if the turbo's ahem... worn out... its component parts can kill your engine in the course of them breaking up and finding their way into the cylinders

Thanks, I did add some wynns turbo cleaner to the fuel tank, but I have since found a hole in one of the inter cooler hoses, which I’ve patched up and all working fine now.https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/243533-the-m...

The electronic actuators fail on these as does the intercooler hose on the os, where does the noise come from ?
It was a split in the intercooler hose going into the throttle body, it’s the only one I didn’t thoroughly check as I only replaced it 2 years ago. I think the noise must have just been the air escaping from the split.I still think the actuator/vanes could have stuck resulting in over boost and leading to the demise of the hose as it played up a week before it failed, then was ok again, so at that stage it obviously wasn’t the hose. Maybe the wynns turbo cleaner will stop it sticking in the future.
