Just rewatched it tonight for the first time in years.

Wow.

I'd forgotten what a raw representation of war and conflict this movie is, it really doesn't hold back.

Apart from the possible white saviour complex, what a movie. Plus in surround sound it's pretty epic.

Can anyone recommend any movies in a similar vein, that aren't too "Hollywood".

Been recommended Band of Brothers before as a TV show, will it match up to this?

Band of Brothers is highly recommended. The book of BHD is even better than the film.

BOB but the pacific is a lot more raw, tough going as well. Brutal really.

I think Hurt Locker is pretty good as realism, the sniper scene is epic stuff.

If you're looking for something raw, that doesn't hold back, then you should try Savior (1998).

Although starring Dennis Quaid (who was awesome in it, by the way), it's not in the least Hollywood. It's grim and bleak, and not for the faint hearted.

Im not a fan of war films but Black Hawk Down is in my top three, and a brilliant film regardless of genre. Really conveys the horror for all involved.

Hurt locker for realism????

The only realistic scene in hurt locker is when he’s in the supermarket, overwhelmed by cereals. The rest is total bks, approximately as realistic as Sonic the hedgehog 2.

BOB is great though!

Have a look at "The Outpost"

True story, set in Afghanistan.

Agree on BOB and BHD, both among my favourites. The first 20 mins of saving private ryan are pretty gritty as well. I couldn't get into the Pacific, I didn't think the characters were as strong as BOB so didn't feel as involved with them, maybe I need to revisit it?

13 hours is not bad either? Probably a bit hollywood, but I liked it.

War is boring and doesn't real work well in films, so liabilities are taken. Hurt locker was nominated for a oscar, it isn't a documentary, never suggests it is.
it plays on the little nuances, and the final bit shows, the character has traded the adrenaline of combat for the tedium of life at home. That is the reality of war, not heroes , tedium and sitting around.

There’s “Behind Enemy Lines” but it’s Hollywood war fantasy. Good fun though biggrin

You wont really top blackhawk down because its over 2 hours of non-stop sensory overload using more modern weapons and tactics.

I thought 'Hacksaw Ridge' was pretty raw, 'Fury' (2014) had its moments, I also thought 'Dunkirk' was surprisingly tense. I would go for:

1. Platoon
2. The Hurt Locker
3. Full Metal Jacket.

Letters from Iwo Jima as mentioned above is also a very good film.

I would not stream any of these classics either, i would either use physical disc or, find streams that have lossless audio. Audio is very important for these films, even if you are on headphones.
