Identification of a military guards uniform, perhaps WWII

I have found a painting from the continent which shows a guard in a to me unfamiliar uniform.
Could this be possibly a british guard?
If so I could date the painting between 1944 and 1955.

I asked some people who are excellent at these things and this is what they said
'The  anklets and red beret suggest it could be RMP, but in reality it's nothing more than a cartoon, and hand in pocket, fag in mouth is more indicative of a mickey take than anything serious'

The painting is serious and all details are quite realistic, though, what I think, in a kind of expressionistic style.
That´s why I guessed the origin of the painting from about 1900.
The guard in the painting is guarding the entrance of a castle.
It is locally known, that the castle was occupied by the "English" (you would of course prefer the term "British") in WWII and was used as headquarter (sometime between 1944 and 1955).
It was also badly devastated during that period.

Granted the guard looks quite relaxed. Most likely WWII already had finished at the time and being safe and welcome in that rural area, also known for its pretty girls, would explain the lax situation.

Maybe some excessive parties of the Highlanders wrecked the castle.
The dog is clearly waiting for some corned beef pamper.

I guess RMP means Royal Military Police.
